    • The invention is directed at a disposable dry cleansing article that is formed from a melt extruded fibrous web that has incorporated into the fibers forming the web from 0.5 to 20 percent by weight of a melt extruded lathering surfactant. The invention, dry article generally comprises a melt extruded fibrous web of a thermoplastic polymer having a basis weight of from about 10 to 200 g/m2, preferably 10 to 150 g/m2 wherein the fibers have a lathering surfactant incorporated into the fiber at a level that allows the article to be used two (2) or more times with a rinse foam volume of 15 or more, with an initial foam volume of at least 50 ml.The novel melt extruded web can be made by the following sequential steps: (a) providing to an extruder a thermoplastic resin, such as polypropylene; (b) blending into the resin a lathering surfactant at a temperature at which the surfactant is not significantly degraded; (c) forming the blend into melt extruded fibers, (d) collecting the fibers, (e) forming the fibers into a web and optionally, further treating the web by coating additional components, laminating to further layers or consolidating for strength or the like.

    • A method for forming a unitary polymeric projection or fastener comprising a thin, strong flexible backing, and a multiplicity of thin spaced hook members projecting from the upper surface of the unitary backing the method generally including extruding a thermoplastic resin through a die plate which die plate is shaped to form a base layer and spaced ridges, ribs or hook elements projecting above a surface of the base layer. When the die forms the spaced ridges or ribs the cross sectional shape of the hook members are formed by the die plate while the initial hook member thickness is formed by transversely cutting the ridges at spaced locations along their lengths to form discrete cut portions of the ridges. Subsequently longitudinal stretching of the backing layer (in the direction of the ridges on the machine direction) separates these cut portions of the ridges, which cut portion then form spaced apart hook members. The extruded hook members or cut rib hook members are then heat treated resulting in shrinkage of at least a portion of at least the hook head portion thickness by from 5 to 90 percent, preferably 30 to 90 percent.

    • There is provided an apparatus and methods for stretching one or more zones of a web and webs including one or more stretched zones. Each of the stretched zones in the web is stretched in the cross-web direction, i.e., the direction transverse to the downweb direction. The stretching can be performed continuously on the web as the web is advancing through the apparatus in the down-web direction. The method for stretching an extensible web in the cross direction generally is practiced on a substantially continuous cross-directional extensible web. The web is traveling in a first downweb direction at a first speed. The extensible web has a width and substantially continuous length in the first downweb direction. The crossweb stretching occurs in an orientation zone established between at least two moving nip points. The nip points are in a plane of the web with a leading nip downweb of a trailing nip with the at least two nips offset in the cross direction. The leading nip moves at a faster speed than the trailing nip, where the degree of crossweb orientation in the orientation zone is proportional at least to a ratio of the leading nip speed to the trailing nip speed.
