    • A system and process for creating an interactive digital image, which allows a viewer to interact with a displayed image so as to change it with regard to a desired effect, such as exposure, focus or color, among others. An interactive image includes representative images which depict a scene with some image parameter varying between them. The interactive image also includes an index image, whose pixels each identify the representative image that exhibits the desired effect related to the varied image parameter at a corresponding pixel location. For example, a pixel of the index image might identify the representative image having a correspondingly-located pixel that depicts a portion of the scene at the sharpest focus. One primary form of interaction involves selecting a pixel of a displayed image whereupon the representative image identified in the index image at a corresponding pixel location is displayed in lieu of the currently displayed image.

    • The present invention is embodied in a system and method for training a statistical model, such as a Bayesian network, to effectively capture probabilistic dependencies between the true state of an object being tracked and evidence from various tracking modalities to achieve robust digital vision tracking. The model can be trained and structured offline using data collected from sensors, that may be either vision or non-vision-based, in conjunction with position estimates from the sensing modalities. Both the individual reports about targets provided by visual processing modalities and inferences about the context-sensitive accuracies of the reports are considered. Dependencies among variables considered in the model can be restructured with Bayesian learning methods that revise the dependencies considered in the model. In use, the learned models for fusing multiple modalities of visual processing provide real-time position estimates by making inferences from reports from the modalities and by inferences about the context-specific reliabilities of one or more modalities.

    • A vision-based controller provides translational and rotational control signals to a computer or other input driven device. The controller includes a tracked object, positioned in space and having at least a first reference point and a second reference point. The tracked object is capable of three dimensional rotational and translational movement. At least one imaging device, positioned at a distance from the tracked object, generates an image of the tracked object, at plural succeeding times. A processor unit receives the image, comprised of pixel values, from the imaging device; identifies pixels corresponding to a current center of the tracked object, the first reference point and the second reference point; determines a current dimension (i.e., size or radius) of the tracked object; calculates a translational and rotational displacement of the tracked object based on the above information; and generates control signals in accordance with the transitional and rotational displacement.

The authoring tools are easy to use and are interoperable to provide an easy and cost-effective method of creating a talking paper application. The authoring tools provide a framework for creating audio content and image content and interactively linking the audio content and the image content. The authoring tools also provide for verifying the interactively linked audio and image content, reviewing the audio content, the image content and the interactive linking on a display device. Finally, the authoring tools provide for saving the audio content, the video content and the interactive linking for publication to a manufacturer for integration in an end user platform or talking paper platform.

    • Technology for pre-ordering (e.g., pre-fetching content) at a shared computing premise is described. The technology can enable a user to locate and reserve an available seat at a shared computing premise (e.g., an iCafé). A service can transmit to the user a list of nearby iCafés or available seats that is ranked or ordered based on various criteria. The selected iCafé may pre-fetch content. The iCafé may also provide the pre-fetched content on removable media so that the user does not need to view all the pre-fetched content only at the iCafé. The iCafé may provide a search and/or document notification service and perform searches, download documents, and check for changes to specified documents even when the user is not logged on or using a computer at the iCafé. After the documents are retrieved and stored, the iCafé may send a notification to the user.
