    • The one-way clutch mechanism of a torque converter which has a short axial dimension, and which neither produces a shock noise (an abnormal sound) nor suffers a power loss in the idle mode thereof. An outer race (30 in FIG. 1 ) is united with a stator (18), and supports the stator (18) so as to be axially movable and rotatable with respect to a stationary shaft (16). The outer race (30) includes a first side face (32) which is formed with first teeth. An inner race (40) is united with the stationary shaft (16), and includes a second side face (42) opposite to the first side face (32). The second side face (42) is formed with second teeth which can prohibit the rotation of the outer race (30) in one direction, by meshing with the first teeth. The stator (18) and the outer race (30) receive the axial component force of a fluid stream which changes depending upon a speed ratio. Thus, the unitary structure (18, 30) comes near to or away from the inner race (40), thereby to engage or disengage the first teeth and the second teeth.

    • A twin-clutch-type transmission which can suitably change a power transmitting route, corresponding to the gear shifting conditions, without requiring complex a control, includes a first clutch mechanism, a second clutch mechanism, a first gear mechanism connected to the first output member of the first clutch mechanism, a second gear mechanism connected to the second output member of the second clutch mechanism, a control device, and an interlocking member. The first clutch mechanism includes an input member, a first output member, a first pressure plate and a first thrust means which engages the first output member to the input member through the first pressure plate. The second clutch mechanism includes an input member, a second output member, a second pressure plate and a second thrust means which engages the second output member to the input member through the second pressure plate. The first gear mechanism has gear sets to provide a first group of gear ratios, a second gear mechanism connected to the second output member of the second clutch mechanism. The second gear mechanism has gear sets to provide a second group of gear ratios. The control device controls thrust forces generated by the thrust means so as to change one of the two clutch mechanisms from an engaged condition to a disengaged condition and to change the other of the two clutch mechanism from a disengaged condition to an engaged condition. The interlocking member mechanically interlocks the first pressure plate of the first clutch mechanism and the second pressure plate of the second clutch mechanism.

    • An electromagnetic powder clutch of double-gap type comprising a first rotary member, a second rotary member and a labyrinth device. The first rotary member has a first friction surface, and a second friction surface which is disposed radially inwardly of and opposite to the first friction surface. The second rotary member of an annular shape incorporates therein an annular solenoid coil and has a wall thickness sufficient to accommodate the solenoid coil. The second rotary member is disposed between the first and second friction surfaces of the first rotary member, and has a radially outer friction surface opposite to the first friction surface and a radially inner friction surface opposite to the second friction surface. The outer friction surface of the second rotary member cooperates with the first friction surface to define therebetween a first powder gap accommodating a first mass of magnetic powder, while the inner friction surface cooperates with the second friction surface to define therebetween a second powder gap accommodating therein a second mass of magnetic powder. The labyrinth device closes the first and second powder gaps to enclose the first and second masses of magnetic powder in the first and second powder gaps, respectively.
