    • A coupling having an internal pressure-loaded V-seal between a male member and a female member incudes a sleeve member insertable into the female member bore. The V-seal is repeatably positionable in the sleeve member such that insertion of the male member serves to slightly compress the V-seal and thereby preload the seal before pressurization. Upon pressurization of the coupling, the lips of the V-seal are urged to expand longitudinally against the leading face of the male member and an internal shoulder in the sleeve member. The pressurization of the coupling also tends to urge the sleeve member toward the male member, to enhance the seal and to compensate for any tolerances between the coupling halves.

    • An apparatus for locking together simultaneously one or more male and female coupling members is disclosed, primarily for use in undersea hydraulic applications. The apparatus comprises a sliding lock plate supported by a first junction plate, the plate being slideable perpendicular to the coupling axis between an unlocked position and a locked position. The sliding lock plate has a number of passages configured to receive each coupling member therethrough in the unlocked position. In the locked position, the passages are configured to engage the circumference of the male and female coupling members and restrict axial movement of the members.

    • A feedback control system is disclosed for use in processing signals employed in pulse transmittance oximetry. The signals are produced in response to light transmitted through, for example, a finger at two different wavelengths. Each signal includes a slowly varying baseline component representing the relatively fixed attenuation of light produced by bone, tissue, skin, and hair. The signals also include pulsatile components representing the attenuation produced by the changing blood volume and oxygen saturation within the finger. The signals are processed by the feedback control system before being converted by an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter (72) for subsequent analysis by a microcomputer (16). The feedback control system includes a controllable offset subtractor (66), a programmable gain amplifier (68), controllable drivers (44) for the light sources (40, 42), and the microcomputer (16). The microcomputer (16) receives signals from the offset subtractor (66), gain amplifier (68), drivers (44) and A/D converter (72) to produce signals that control the function of the subtractor (66) and drivers (44) in the following manner. Normally, the drivers ( 44) are maintained within a predetermined current range. In the event the microcomputer (16) senses an output from the converter (72) that is not within a predetermined range, the drive signal is adjusted to produce an acceptable signal. The magnitude of the offset removed by the subtractor (66), as controlled by the microcomputer (16), is maintained at a constant level when the converter (72) output is within a first predetermined range and is a predetermined function of the converter (72) output when that output falls within a second predetermined range.

    • A pressure-balanced hydraulic coupling for use in undersea drilling and production operations, the coupling having radial passageways communicating between the male and female members such that substantial fluid pressure is not exerted against the face of either member during coupling or uncoupling or during the coupled state. Check valves in both the male and female members are opened when the male member probe is fully inserted into the receiving chamber of the female member. Mutually opposed valve stems extending from each check valve contact one another to effectuate the simultaneous opening of each check valve, and allow fluid to flow through a valve port and then radially through matching fluid passageways in the male and female members. The radial passageways of the male and female members match up at their longitudinal surfaces so that fluid pressure between the male and female members is in a substantially radial direction and is not exerted at the face of either member. Metal seals may be used to seal the annulus formed between the male and female members when they are coupled. The metal seals may be pressure-energized in response to fluid pressure in the coupling to enhance the sealing effect.
