    • A data deletion device has a take-up reel and a supply reel each provided with a separate drive. The supply reel is for carrying tape to be cleared. A guiding device for the tape is provided, and a device for detecting a reflector marking is provided in the tape path between the supply reel and the take-up reel. The said latter device, upon detecting a reflector marking of the tape, sets a device by means of which the coil is energized at the earliest upon detection of the reflector marking, and a switching device is provided by means of which the coil is switched off at the earliest after one further revolution of the reel carrying the tape to be deleted.

    • Control apparatus for a tape recorder includes a Central Processor Unit (CPU) and a Control Panel having data entry switches, mode selection switches, speed selection switches, a multiposition function select switch and other controls and a display, all of which communicate with the CPU. The system enables the operator to enter commands to be executed by the CPU in controlling the tape transport at predetermined footage locations on the tape (such as Beginning of Data or End of Data) or at a predetermined value of parameters, such as tape pack diameters of the reel being emptied or filled (Beginning of Tape or End of Tape). The operator may enter data to set or change such locations or other parameter; and he may change commands in the CPU via the data entry switches. The operator may retrieve data or command signals from the CPU and view them on a display. A footage indicator is stored and continually updated in the CPU, and it may be changed to any desired footage setting by the operator. A wide range of operating speeds may be selected in the various modes of operation. Actual operating speeds during start-up and reversals are under program control until the speed set by the operator is reached. Under control of the CPU and at the direction of the operator, the system may thus be programmed to execute any one of a number of commands at predetermined but settable footage locations or tape pack dimensions.

    • The present invention provides an improvement in a card reader type audio visual teaching device. The device employs a card handling mechanism for moving an information card which may contain both audio and visual information, across a record/playback transducing head. A dual track magnetic stripe on the information card carries instructor information or a question on one track to be audibly reproduced by the device which a student can hear through a speaker or preferably a set of headphones. A microphone permits a student to record an attempted repetition or response on the second track. The improvement comprises a multispeed card transport drive mechanism which permits either the student track or both the instructor track and the student track to be driven past the record/playback head at a substantially reduced rate. Additionally, the transport drive mechanism includes a repeat mechanism for returning the card to an initial position. A drive capstan is canted in one direction for forward movement of the card and in an opposite direction for reverse movement of the card while a pair of limit switches serve to limit the travel of the card in the respective directions. A pair of hardened and polished pins are mounted within the card guide track to substantially reduce wear and friction caused by the moving cards.

    • A method for controlling the transfer of a flexible web member from a supply reel to a take-up reel, according to which the rotational speeds of the supply reel and the take-up reel are measured and whereby the ratio between these measurements is established independently of the speed and direction of the movement of the web member. The method comprises the steps of storing reference information representing the characteristics of different types of reel and web, releasing the reference information corresponding to the reels and webs used, generating intermediate signals which represent the said ratio combining these intermediate signals with the released reference information and generating output signals in dependence upon the momentary position of the web in relation to one or other ends thereof, and using these output signals for the purpose of visually displaying the position of the web and/or of controlling certain operations of the apparatus. Apparatus is also disclosed comprising angular speed detectors for measuring the rotational speed of each of the reels, and a micro-processor having two counters totalizing the pulse signals generated by the speed detectors and a divider circuit for generating, on receiving a control signal, intermediate signal representing the ratio between the contents of the counters, a memory containing reference information relating to different types of reels and web, and a circuit for combining the intermediate signals with the stored information corresponding to the reels and web used and generating output signals in dependence upon the instantaneous position of the web in relation to one or other of its ends. The output signals are applied to a display device serving to indicate the position of the web member.

    • A speed sensing roller is mounted in position on a digital tape cassette apparatus for frictional contact with a length of magnetic tape within a cassette housing through that one of the apertures in the cassette housing which is located closest to one of the cassette hubs operating as the takeup hub during tape travel in a forward direction. Utilizing a tape speed signal generated by a speed sensor driven by the speed sensing roller, a closed-loop servomechanism controls a pair of motors coupled directly to the respective cassette hubs to afford constant tape speed. The servomechanism is associated with a tape tension control circuit which causes controlled energization of a supply side one of the hub motors during tape travel in either direction in order to maintain proper tape tension. Various other circuit means are provided for optimum tape transportation in the digital tape cassette apparatus.
