    • The invention is directed to techniques for managing communication between a client and multiple servers over a network through an intermediary network device (e.g., content switch). In response to a request for content from a client, the network device selects a server to respond to the request. The network device includes a flow manager that manages the flow of data from the server through the network device to the client. In response to a second request, the network device may select a different server to respond to the request. In this case, the flow manager manages the flow of data from the new server through the network device transparently for the client, so that the client communicates only through the network device regardless of which server is providing the response to the requests.

    • A method for reliably measuring preformatted servo patterns, on a magnetic tape, for positioning a magnetic head. The tape has constant frequency stripes marking servo pattern areas. The drive reading the preformatted tape has a read channel amplifier with automatic gain control (AGC). When a stripe is detected, AGC is enabled. Before leaving a stripe, AGC is placed on hold. The amplitudes of two servo bursts are then measured with a gain that has been calibrated by a signal from a stripe. During the time AGC is enabled, the amplifier peak output is limited to less than half the maximum amplifier peak output. The servo pattern signal amplitude is about twice the signal amplitude of a stripe, so that servo patterns are measured with almost the maximum signal-to-noise ratio. When a stripe is detected, a counter counts pulses resulting from the stripe signal, for a fixed time, to ensure that the stripe detection is valid. If the stripe is qualified, the servo pattern measurements are used for head alignment adjustment. If the strip is not qualified, the servo pattern measurements are discarded.

    • A tape cassette provided with a tape member comprised of a magnetic tape connected to transparent leader tapes affixed to a pair of tape reels rotatably supported in a cassette body via connection tapes. In this cassette body, a light emitting element hole is located between the pair of tape reels. Light transmission holes allowing the light from the light emitting element facing the cassette body via the light emitting element hole to pass therethrough out of the cassette body with the tape member interposed therebetween are provided in the side walls orthogonal to the travelling direction of the tape member travelling over the distance between the pair of tape reels. In addition, a tape information display portion is provided in the tape member which indicates the type of the magnetic tape accommodated in the cassette body. This tape information display portion is provided at a leader tape portion positioned between the point of intersection of a line connecting the light emitting element hole and the light transmission holes and the leader tape and the end portion of the connection tape when the member is completely wound around either tape reel. Since the tape information display portion is formed on the leader tape, the amount of light reflected therefrom is not influenced by the connection tape connecting the magnetic tape to the leader tape so as to result in a high degree of precision of the amount of light detected by the light receiving element.

    • A VCR has a reel sensor prism device fabricated by being separated into a scattering member and a fixing member. The scattering member includes a cylindrical body part for transmitting light and a head formed to the upper portion of the body part for scattering the light. A fixing member is formed with a center hole of being inserted with the body part of the scattering member, and two pairs of hooks are formed to the lower end. A base for supporting and fixing the fixing member is formed with two pairs of hook holes and a thruhole for passing the light generated from a reel sensor light emitting part therethrough. By this construction, the light generated from the reel sensor light emitting part is prevented from being scattered at the body part to minimize loss of the transmitted light, thereby maximizing the transmitting effect of the light and preventing a malfunction of the VCR. Also, the assembling is completed by fitting the hooks of the fixing member into the hook holes to improve assemblage and productivity.

    • A method for checking top and end of tape for data recording and reproducing apparatus is disclosed. The method includes a first step for sensing a transparent tape section of a start portion of a tape wound about a tape take-up reel so as to sense the tape top. At a second step, a tape supply reel rotation period is detected and the detected supply reel rotation period is compared to a preset value. When the detected supply reel rotation period is not longer than the preset value, the tape end is checked at a predetermined period. However, when the detected supply reel rotation period is longer than the preset value, no tape end is checked. The method makes top-end checking time become optimal and saves power of the recording and reproducing apparatus, and reduces pulse noise generated in turning on or turning off the top-end checking LED.
