    • A method of operating a telephone system wherein commercial messages may be inserted into telephone calls. Telephone subscribers may be financially rewarded for participating in the system. The subscribers may switch between a mode wherein advertisements are inserted and a mode wherein advertisements are excluded from calls. The subscribers may respond to advertisements by using their telephones to connect with the advertiser. Telephone calls may be recorded at the discretion of the call participants and may be forwarded for posting on social networks. Advertisers may be given the opportunity to buy advertising time wherein their advertisements are inserted into telephone calls. Advertising time may be acquired by bidding or by fixed predetermined price purchasing.

    • A system includes a telephone and a distant device. The distant device contains one or more telephone numbers which are later to be dialed at the telephone. The telephone numbers are transmitted in coded form, preferably dual tone multifrequency form, from the device to the telephone. The distant device may be a directory assistance service position, a caller ID receiver, and answering machine, a voice or electronic mail system, a terminal operated by a secretary or receptionist, or a simple DTMF keyboard. After the telephone numbers are received, they are stored in any of several memories in the telephone. Later, the user selects one of the entries for dialing and the entry is used for address signaling. Optionally, storage, selection and dialing of a memory entry can be further simplified by using voice processing techniques. The system is particularly pertinent to the driver of an automobile who is operating a cellular telephone, to a travelling individual who regularly receives and needs to return a large number of calls, to a pedestrian carrying a portable telephone, or to a person with a physical disability, because it saves the user having to jot down telephone numbers and dialing them manually. A particularly significant embodiment enables the user of this system to establish a customized paging service through an ordinary telephone network, using end-user, customer premises equipment only.

    • A multi-user personal message transmitting and receiving system utilizing a conventional facsimile machine, a conventional facsimile machine having line connections to the input/output port of a computer, a conventional paperless facsimile machine with memory for document storage, a MODEM equipped computer, or a conventional answering machine with mass memory for message storage. A dual tone multi-frequency decoder (DTMF receiver) is connected to the telephone network of the machine or computer utilized and a voice synthesizer is connected to the telephone network advising the caller on the telephone line concerning the personal information codes of the users of the system or advising the caller to enter the personal information code of the particular user prior to transmitting the message. A coding system is built into the central processing unit of the machine or computer utilized for setting and storing the individual user personal information codes and corresponding personal confidential codes and recognizing the incoming code preceding an incoming message. When the incoming code is recognized as one of the stored personal information codes, the coding system controls the automatic reception and storage of the incoming message in the respective code area of the memory which can be retrieved by the respective user by entering the respective personal confidential code.

    • A telephone answering machine includes at least two tapes, the first of which records a subscriber's outgoing universal message (OGM) to all callers. A second of the two tapes records incoming messages from callers. A control device detects a tone code defined by, and entered by, a caller in conjunction with recording one of the messages as a message from the caller. The second tape is rewound and plays back the recorded caller's message to the subscriber. The subscriber can then re-enter the same code and record a response to the recorded caller's message on the first tape. The control device detects the code being re-entered by the caller if the caller has called again, in search of the response recorded by the subscriber, which corresponds to the re-entered code. The control device further searches for the re-entered code on the first tape in conjunction with the response recorded by the subscriber in response to the caller having re-entered the code. Thereafter, there is selective playback to the caller of only the response recorded by the subscriber which corresponds to the re-entered code.
