    • A method for shredding and packing used structural elements of nuclear reactors, such as fuel assembly cases, comprises the steps of shredding structural elements to scrap pieces; flushing the scrap pieces in a transport container and flushing away highly radioactive particles of foreign matter and collecting the particles in the interior of the transport container; packing the flushed scrap pieces around the particles of foreign matter collected in the interior; and inserting the packed transport container into a sealable disposal container. An apparatus for performing the method includes a shredder assembly, an interchangeable transport container disposed below the shredder assembly; connectors for connecting the transport housing in a liquid cycle; a filter disposed in the liquid cycle; a carriage for laterally displacing the transport container relative to the shredder assembly; and lifting and transportation devices for lifting the transport container and for inserting the transport container into an ultimate disposal container.

    • A system and a method for removing and consolidating the spent fuel rods of a fuel assembly is disclosed herein. The sytem comprises a pushing assembly having a push rod for pushing a selected fuel rod out of a fuel assembly, a fuel assembly positioner including an elevator for conveniently positioning a fuel assembly within the spent fuel pool of a nuclear facility, a rod catching grid for preventing the pushed-out fuel rods from falling to the bottom of the pool and a transition cannister for funneling the rods into a consolidated arrangement within a storage cannister. In operation, the push rod is positioned over and engaged against the upper end of a fuel rod to be removed from the assembly. Thus engaged, the push rod is inserted through the cells in the grids of the fuel assembly that surround the selected fuel rod, thereby pushing it out of the fuel assembly. Thus the grid cells are used as an alignment means for the push rod during the rod-pushing operation.

    • A fuel rod directing chamber for compacting an array of fuel rods from an uncompacted array corresponding to the spacing of fuel rods in a fuel rod assembly to a compacted array in which no spacing exists between the individual fuel rods. The chamber is comprised of an elongated funnel containing a plurality of cavities extending longitudinally therethrough. The cavities form a plurality of holes at an entry end of the funnel corresponding in number and array to an array of fuel rods in a fuel rod assembly. The spacing between the cavities decreases along the length of the funnel until no spacing exists between the cavities. By causing fuel rods of a spent nuclear fuel rod assembly to pass through the cavities of the directing chamber, the spacing between the individual rods decreases, thereby reducing the reactivity of the rods, and increasing the density thereof. Because the location and identity of each spent fuel rod is determinable even in the compacted array, accountability of the entire amount of spent fuel material is at all times maintained.

    • An apparatus for consolidating the nuclear fuel elements originally arranged in a square pattern into a truss of tightly packed elements comprises a vertical quiver of pyramidal shape having lateral surfaces converging downwardly and a rectangular cross-section. Two opposite faces of the quiver are formed with projections of downwardly increasing amplitude for rearranging the elements in a triangular pattern when they are lowered into the quiver. Dividing walls perpendicular to those faces which are provided with projections separate and guide rows of elements at the top part of the quiver. A grid at the top of the quiver comprises compartments for introducing elements and consists of several fractions which may be moved apart from each other and brought together along a direction parallel to the dividing wall.

    • A method and apparatus for withdrawing spent fuel rods from a nuclear fuel rod assembly into a different nuclear fuel rod container wherein the spent fuel rods have a higher fuel rod density, whereby a greater number of spent fuel rods can be stored in a water storage pool. The individual rods are drawn upwardly through a transition funnel from the fuel rod assembly into a fuel rod container. Individual wires extend through the fuel rod container, through the transition funnel and are secured to the top ends of the individual fuel rods within a fuel rod assembly. All of the fuel rods are withdrawn concurrently and are merged toward one another into a tighter array within the fuel rod container.

    • A grid structure (42) is mounted within the upper portion (24) of a tapered canister (24), for receiving a relatively loosely packed rectangular array of rods (22) and rearranging the rods into a relatively tightly packed rectangular array at the lower end of the grid. The grid structure comprises a multiplicity of flat, vertically oriented trapezoidal segments (78, 80) interconnected to form a plurality of vertically overlapping grid layers (74, 76). The layers alternate between a row orientation and a column orientation, and thus form a substantially continuous honeycomb of longitudinal cells (64) for guiding individual rods. The cross-sectional area of each cell decreases from the uppermost layer (74a) to the lowermost layer (74i) such that the rods are funneled by the cells to form the tightly packed array.
