    • An East-West switching transistor is coupled between a flyback transformer primary winding and a horizontal deflection output transistor circuit to control retrace energy to obtain an East-West modulation of the deflection current amplitude as required for East-West pincushion raster correction. The East-West switching transistor isolates a retrace resonant circuit that includes a horizontal deflection winding from a flyback resonant circuit that includes the flyback transformer during a portion of retrace. The deflection winding is coupled to a common conductor to permit the use of a retrace voltage sample, developed in the deflection winding and coupled to the East-West switching transistor, to control the switching operation in a manner that bypasses the flyback transformer. A resistor coupled in series with the primary winding develops a voltage, during trace, that is indicative of beam current. The resistor voltage is coupled to the East-West switching transistor to prevent beam current variation from causing raster width variation.

    • A television receiver is controlled as to the degree of vertical zoom via a deflection current ramp that varies in slope and which may be delayed to achieve panning. Due to the increased slope when zoomed, the deflection current and the electron beam complete a trace in less time than the normal vertical interval. The deflection current is maintained at one extreme or the other outside the trace interval, and the beam is blanked. A retrace signal generator coupled in a feedback loop with the power supply for the deflection circuit determines the midpoint of the blanking period and generates a fast retrace at or near the midpoint. The feedback loop is arranged to minimize the DC average current in the deflection winding by having a current source responsive to the DC average current for charging a timing ramp that triggers retrace upon reaching a threshold. The slope of the timing ramp varies with DC loading, thus advancing or retarding retrace to center retrace in the blanking interval.

    • In the velocity modulation apparatus for a three-tube projection television, an effective velocity modulation can be implemented under due consideration of humans eye's relative visibility characteristics with respect to the three primary colors of R, G and B, and the velocity modulation apparatus includes a VM signal extracting circuit 1 for extracting a velocity modulation (VM) signal from the luminance signal; a plurality of driving circuits 3 to 5 having three different gains at ratios of 0. 3:0. 59:0. 11; and a red color VM coil 7, a green color VM coil 8 and a blue color VM coil 9 provided for three corresponding Braun tubes, respectively and driven by the driving circuits 3 to 5, respectively. Since the respective gains of the driving circuits 3 to 5 are previously determined in correspondence to the eye's relative visibility of the three primary colors of R, G and B, it is possible to perform the velocity modulation being based on the practical emphasis at picture image contours, and thereby to eliminate wasteful power consumption.
