    • A process which comprises the steps of introducing combustible solid material into an upper section of a pyrolysis chamber, moving the material downwardly at a controlled rate through multiple stage zones in the pyrolysis chamber, passing hot gaseous products of the partial oxidation of carbon char upwardly countercurrent to the movement of the solid material in the pyrolysis chamber, driving off volatile matter in the solid material, depositing carbon char in the lower section of the pyrolysis chamber, introducing air into the lower section of the pyrolysis chamber and partially oxidizing the char to form the hot gaseous products, removing a hot overhead fuel gas, passing the overhead fuel gas to a combustion chamber for combustion thereof with air, and applying the resulting hot combustion gases exiting the combustion chamber to a heat load. Where the combusible solid material contains one or more acid components, the process also includes the step of passing the overhead fuel gas to a zone containing a chemical adsorbent. An apparatus for carrying out the above process comprises a pyrolysis chamber, a feed-lock system for introducing a combustible solid feed material into an upper section of the chamber, a series of spaced vertically disposed horizontally moveble grates in the chamber, an air inlet into the lower section of the pyrolysis chamber, ash removal apparatus in the bottom of the chamber, a combustion chamber for the overhead fuel gas, and a heat load to which the resulting hot combustion gas is applied.

    • A processor for processing the residue which is discharged from an incinerator comprises a receiver for receiving the residue and a discharge enclosure through which the residue is discharged from the receiver. The receiver has a secondary combustion chamber formed therein and an input passage opens into the secondary combustion chamber. A transfer passage communicates between the secondary combustion chamber and the discharge enclosure. A flow control device is located in the transfer passage and is operable to open or close the transfer passage to permit or prevent the flow of ash from the secondary combustion chamber to the discharge enclosure. An air blower is provided for the purposes of supplying combustion air to the secondary combustion chamber to encourage further combustion of the combustibles present in the residue. A conveyor is provided in the discharge enclosure for conveying the ash through the discharge enclosure.

    • Halogenated hydrocarbon waste materials are burned in a horizontal fire tube boiler. In the disclosed and illustrated embodiments, liquid and/or gaseous waste of highly chlorinated hydrocarbons (often, very inert content) are input along with a flow of fuel oil or gas as required to increase combustion temperature. While high combustion temperatures are achieved, a stable flame front is established. A refractory lined combustion chamber of substantial length is incorporated to contain the flame front near adiabatic conditions for sufficient dwell time so that the combustion gases leaving the vicinity achieve near complete combustion. Before entering the water jacket boiler furnace tube the temperature of the flue gas is dropped to a level enabling the use of standard materials of construction of the tube sheets of the boiler, where the fire tube boiler is most vulnerable to corrosion from excessive temperatures and condensation of chlorinated hydrocarbons reacting on the interior thereof. The tube sheet boiler permits burning of halogenated hydrocarbon waste with minimal support fuel requirements to yield flue gas containing exceptionally high hydrogen chloride concentration.

    • A mobile garbage incinerator having an incinerator body unit. The incinerator body unit includes a hanging drum for lifting and dumping garbage into a collecting tank. Garbage is then moved into a main incinerating room for a first stage incineration process. The resulting ashes are collected and compressed. The resulting waste gases are passed into a sphere-shaped secondary incinerating room. The resulting quasi-purified air is passed into an air-circulating tank for separating dust particles. The resulting further purified air is passed through a water curtain and then passed into the atmosphere.

    • Apparatus for burning material and utilizing the heat of burning has a primary combustion chamber with an upper portion vented to the atmosphere, the material being fed into the primary combustion chamber. A secondary combustion chamber is in communication with a lower portion of the primary combustion chamber, and air is supplied into the secondary combustion chamber. A fan draws air from the atmosphere into the upper portion of the primary combustion chamber and draws combustion gases downwardly through burning waste material in the primary combustion chamber to cause further combustion of the combustion gases in the secondary combustion chamber. Combustion gases from the primary combustion chamber are vented to the atmosphere from the upper portion of the primary combustion chamber when the fan is not operating.
