    • A seat track assembly for a motor vehicle is disclosed, comprising: an upper track sub-assembly having an upper track; a lower track sub-assembly having a lower track and a stop, with the upper track being slidable over the lower track; and a positive engagement inertia latch for resisting axial sliding motion of the upper track sub-assembly relative the lower track sub-assembly in response to acceleration of the gear relative the lower track sub-assembly. The inertia latch preferably comprises a gear being movable between a non-latching position wherein the gear is rotatable in response to axial sliding of the upper track sub-assembly and a latching position wherein in response to a sudden change in velocity the gear engages the stop, locking the upper track sub-assembly with the lower track sub-assembly. The gear can be mounted on an axle. A base is affixed to the lower seat track sub-assembly, having a contoured surface which receives the axle. The stop can comprise an incline, preferably unitary with the base, and the gear can have gear teeth which wedgingly lockingly engage a rack of teeth on the incline. An all-belts-to-seat latch may also be used to resist both axial displacement and vertical dislocation of the upper seat track relative the lower seat track.

    • A vehicle seat includes a seat cushion assembly for supporting an occupant seated thereon and a seat back cushion assembly for supporting the back of an occupant seated on the seat cushion assembly. An adjusting mechanism is operatively embodied in one of the first and second mounting assemblies and is constructed and arranged to enable the cushion assembly mounted by the one mounting assembly to be moved in opposite directions through a range of adjustable positions with respect to the assembly on which the one mounting assembly mounts the cushion assembly. The adjusting mechanism also includes a locking and releasing device. A vehicle crash sensing system is operatively connected with the adjusting mechanism and is constructed and arranged to provide control of the movement of the cushion assembly mounted by the one mounting assembly in response to the sensing of a crash condition which occurs while said locking device is in the releasing position.

    • An inertia sensitive hinge mechanism allows rotation of a first hinge member relative to a second hinge member about a pivot during normal use and prevents rotation about the pivot when predetermined deceleration forces are present. The inertia sensing latching assembly includes an inertial actuator operatively connected to and rotatable with respect to the second hinge member. The inertial actuator includes first and second cam surfaces and a wedging surface located therebetween. The inertial actuator has a center of gravity spaced from a center of rotation. A first positioning device connected to the first hinge member positions the inertial actuator by sliding engagement with the first cam surface as the first hinge member rotates in an opposite direction when the predetermined forces are not present. A second positioning device connected to the first hinge member positions the inertial actuator by sliding engagement with the second cam surface as the first hinge member further rotates in the opposite direction when the predetermined deceleration forces are not present. When the deceleration forces are present, the first hinge member initially rotates in the opposite direction, and the inertial actuator is positioned by the predetermined deceleration forces such that the wedging surface engages the second positioning device preventing further rotation of the first hinge member in the opposite direction.

    • A seat adjustment latch, selectable at two different force levels, is attached to a slide adjustable seat in a motor vehicle equipped with a seat belt assembly, an inflatable air bag, and a knee restraint. The seat adjustment latch is interlocked with the seat belt assembly of the seat such that when the seat belt is unfastened, the seat adjustment latch is set to release the vehicle seat in the event of a rapid deceleration or impact to the vehicle above a predetermined level of severity. When the seat belt is fastened, the seat latch is set in its firmest possible retention setting and operates such that the inertia and kinetic energy forces of the seat and the occupant seated thereon will not move the seat forward in response to a severe frontal collision. In a preferred embodiment, the seat adjustment latch includes a shearing element configured as a tubular bolt for retaining the slide adjustable vehicle seat to the seat rails. The tubular bolt is selectively reinforced at a shear region by a moveable insert piece, the movement of which is influenced mechanically by the fastened/unfastened condition of the seat belt. In an alternate embodiment, the movement of the insert piece is controlled electrically.

    • An emergency inertia lock 24 is provided on a tilt lock 20 of a vehicle seat 12 hinge 18. The tilt lock 20 allows adjustment of the degree of tilt between the seat back 16 and seat bottom 14 by disengaging then re-engaging. A spring drum clutch 36 locks a clutch spur gear 32 in a series of spur gears (28, 30). A first extension 38 of the spring drum clutch 36 may be shifted to release the tilt lock 20 manually. A torsion pendulum 52 includes forward and rearward extensions 58 and 60 which contact a second extension 40 of the spring drum clutch 36 to re-engage the tilt lock 20 if it is manually released when a sufficient interial load is applied. A reset lever 70 is provided to reset the tilt lock 20.
