    • Correlation of videos between fields is determined between a difference between an input interlaced signal and a signal that is delayed by one field with respect to the input interlaced signal. If a determination of being unquestionably a telecine-converted signal is continued for a predetermined number or more of fields, an instruction signal, which instructs to perform inter-field interpolation on the input interlaced signal, is outputted.

    • A method and apparatus for low-delay conversion of 3:2 pulldown video to progressive format with field averaging is disclosed. The method considers 3:2 pulldown interlaced video that represents a four-frame motion picture film sequence as a ten-field interlaced video field sequence of three, two, three, two video fields per motion picture frame respectively for the four-frame sequence. One step of the method is the step of creating a ten-frame progressive video frame sequence, having a delay of approximately one field time with respect to the ten-field interlaced video sequence. This step is achieved by combining at one field time intervals a top field and a bottom field from the ten-field interlaced video sequence, where, at the time of combination, the top field and the bottom field are the most recently available top and bottom fields corresponding to the same motion picture film frame. The method comprises the further step of substituting, for the top field or the bottom field in the combining step, an average of that top or bottom field and the field two fields prior, when that top or bottom field and the field two fields prior correspond to the same motion picture film frame. Apparatus for performing the above method includes a multiplexer that accepts an input video signal, a two-field-time delayed signal, and a signal that represents the average of these two. The multiplexer outputs a send field and a store field that meet the criteria described above. The send field and a one-field-time delayed version of the store field are combined to produce a progressive frame.

    • Jagged vertical or diagonal transition artifacts in interlaced to line doubled progressive scan converted television signals are detected and areas of the television picture having such artifacts are subjected to vertical averaging such that the resolution of the jagged transitions is reduced, thereby softening, "greying" or "fuzzing" the jagged transitions and causing them to appear smooth. Thus, highly contrasted lines appearing in a sawtooth pattern, which are extremely perceptible, are replaced with a flash of what might be characterized as "fuzziness," which is not perceptible. The eye no longer perceives the jagged artifacts. Moreover, areas of reduced vertical and horizontal resolution, resulting from the vertical averaging, do not create any new artifacts and are not perceived by the eye. Artifacts are detected by comparing pixels in corresponding positions in the scan lines of the line doubled progressively scanned television signal. The detection scheme looks for sawtooth patterns by determining if there are differences among pixels in more than one set of three adjacent lines. When a sawtooth pattern is detected, the uncorrected signal in the sawtooth region of a scan line is faded to a vertically filtered or averaged signal just prior to the onset of the sawtooth artifact region and then faded back to the uncorrected signal just subsequent to the sawtooth artifact region. The sawtooth correction signal, which controls fading to and from a filtered video signal, is expanded in all directions horizontally and vertically somewhat beyond the region of the detected artifact in order to insure that all of the artifact is suppressed.

    • An input digital video signal representing a series of input frames is processed to produce an output digital video signal representing a series of output frames with an increased motion blur effect. For each output frame at least one intermediate field or frame is produced by motion compensated temporal interpolation between a pair of the input frames. Each output frame is then produced by combining the intermediate field or frame with at least one further intermediate field or frame and/or with one of the respective input frames so that the output frame has an increased motion blur characteristic compared with that of the input frames. Using motion compensated temporal interpolation, a change in frame rate can also be produced as between the input frames and the output frames.

    • A motion detector generates a field motion detection signal from information contained in adjacent fields of a two-to-one interlaced format video signal. The motion detector comprises an input for receiving the video signal from a source, a first delay for delaying the video signal at the input by one field period less one half of one scanning line period and for providing a first delayed output, a second delay for delaying the video signal at the input by one field period plus one half of one scanning line period and for providing a second delayed output, a first subtraction circuit for subtracting the first delayed output from the video signal to provide a first difference, a second subtraction circuit for subtracting the second delayed output from the video signal to provide a second difference, and a comparison circuit for comparing the first difference with the second difference and for putting out a selected one thereof having a lesser absolute magnitude as the field motion detection signal. A film mode sequence pattern interruption detector using the motion detector is also disclosed.

Pixels relating to an input image derived from a frame of film are sampled at a predetermined rate related to a film scanning speed and a television line standard, and the flow of pixel information is coordinated through a memory section by write control and read control signals. A frame store, which stores image pixel data corresponding to at least one film frame, includes a line output and address inputs for selecting a line start position and a line advance increment. To obtain the aforementioned spatial separation, a line store, which is responsive to the line output of the frame store for storing at least one line of image pixel data, includes a pixel output and address inputs for selecting a pixel start position and a pixel advance increment. Lines and pixels are repeated as necessary for zoom and pan effects by appropriately addressing the frame store for vertical repeats and the line store for horizontal repeats. New image pixels are then generated by a spatial interpolator responsive to the pixel output of the line store.
