    • A motion detector generates a field motion detection signal from information contained in adjacent fields of a two-to-one interlaced format video signal. The motion detector comprises an input for receiving the video signal from a source, a first delay for delaying the video signal at the input by one field period less one half of one scanning line period and for providing a first delayed output, a second delay for delaying the video signal at the input by one field period plus one half of one scanning line period and for providing a second delayed output, a first subtraction circuit for subtracting the first delayed output from the video signal to provide a first difference, a second subtraction circuit for subtracting the second delayed output from the video signal to provide a second difference, and a comparison circuit for comparing the first difference with the second difference and for putting out a selected one thereof having a lesser absolute magnitude as the field motion detection signal. A film mode sequence pattern interruption detector using the motion detector is also disclosed.

    • A received 4-2-0 format, 2-1 interlaced digital component video signal is upconverted to a 4-2-2 format, 2-1 interlaced digital component video signal and a vertical chrominance bandwidth expansion enhancement signal is combined with the chrominance components in order to more closely simulate the wider bandwidth vertical chrominance resolution of the original 4:2:2 format signal from which the 4:2:0 format signal was derived. In a first embodiment, the vertical chrominance enhancement signal is derived from vertical transitions in the luminance component of the 4:2:0 format signal. In a second embodiment, the vertical chrominance enhancement signal is derived from vertical transitions in the luminance component of the 4:2:0 format signal when such vertical transitions are present and, in the absence of a luminance transition, the vertical chrominance enhancement signal is derived from the sampling-rate-reduced chrominance components of the 4:2:0 format signal. In all embodiments, the vertical chrominance enhancement signal is a "bandwidth enhancement" signal which simulates a wide bandwidth vertical detail signal. The vertical chrominance detail signal is self-service from the 4:2:0 format video signal itself and requires no auxiliary signal to be transmitted or stored.

    • A convectional 2-1 interlaced (nominally 50 Hz field rate or nominally 60 Hz field rate) television signal is converted to a form suitable for display on a progressively-scanned variable-frame-rate high-resolution computer-type monitor. First, a succession of progressively-scanned video frames is derived from the interlaced television signal and each frame is repeated at least twice in succession When the interlaced television sign is derived from a motion picture source, the progressively scanned frames are derived by merging opposite polarity fields derived from tho same motion picture frame. For other sources, other interlace-to-progressive scan techniques, such as line duplication or line interpolation, are employed. The sequences of repeated progressively-scanned frames are written into a two frame memory at rate derived from the timing of the progressively-scanned video frames and are read out at a rate derived from the timing of the monitor's frame rate. Frames are skipped or duplicated in order to prevent memory underflow or overflow. Motion-discontinuity-free video displays at refresh rates from 50 Hz to 100 Hz, for 50 Hz inputs, and from 60 Hz to 120 hz for 60 Hz inputs may be achieved.

    • A full dynamic-range video enhancer employs a detail process for lower level transitions in a video signal stream and a spectrum expander for higher level transitions. The characteristics of the detail processor enhancement signal are such that when combined with the main signal path, the rise times of lower level transitions are shortened, but with substantially no accompanying increase in the overall spectral bandwidth. The characteristics of the spectrum expander enhancement signal are such that when combined with the main signal path, the rise times of higher level transitions are shortened, but with an accompanying increase in the overall spectral bandwidth while maintaining low preshoot and overshoot characteristics. For a rising transition level the video enhancer provides enhancement initially by the detail processor, then a combination of the detail processor and the spectrum expander, and then by the spectrum expander. The video enhancer may advantageously be used in a television receiver following a line doubler.

    • A method for processing a quadrature modulated color television picture signal including a luminance component and a chrominance component to reduce cross-color and cross-luminance artificacts in a resultant signal includes in an encoding process the steps of: comb filtering the quadrature modulated chrominance component in a comb filter structure wherein a number of delays between 2 and 13 is adaptively determined by overlap between chrominance and luminance, and the delay is a predetermined one of line scan period, frame scan period, and frame/line scan periods, to put out a comb filtered chroma component; processing the luminance component by passing the luminance component through two complementary filters both symmetrically centered about a chrominance component subcarrier frequency, one filter comprising a band pass filter and the other filter comprising a band reject filter; comb filtering the luminance signal passing through the band pass filter in a comb filter structure wherein a number of delays between 2 and 13 is adaptively determined by overlap between chrominance and luminance, and the delay is the same predetermined one of line scan period, frame scan period, and frame/line scan periods to produce a comb filtered high frequency luminance signal; and adding in phase the comb filtered high frequency luminance signal and the signal passing through the band reject filter in order to provide a comb filtered full bandwidth luminance signal; and, combining in phase the comb filtered chroma component and the comb filtered full bandwidth luminance signal in order to put out a composite signal for transmission or recording. Comb filter decoding having fixed delays are advantageously employed within a system of the present invention.

    • In a television system a transition level signal booster decreases transition time of low level transitions within a video signal without creating artifacts incident to high level transitions within the video signal. The booster includes an input for receiving the video signal, an output for putting out a main path video signal in which transition times of low level transitions have been decreased, a main path for the video signal extending between the input and the output, the main path including a main path adder means for adding a transition boost signal to the video signal, a transition boost signal generator including a connection to said input for receiving the video and for generating the transition boost signal, the generator comprising: a high frequency transition signal generator for generatigng a high frequency transition signal incident to the detection of a transition level in the video signal, a wave shaper including a first path having a delay match in series therein for putting out a first signal and a second path in parallel with the first path, the second path including sign removal and shaper means therein for generating a second control signal having a decreasing amplitude for each video transition having a magnitude above a predetermined amount, a first multiplier for multiplying the first signal by the second signal to generate the transition boost signal, said multiplier being connected to said main path adder means so that said transition boost signal may be added to the main path video signal, thereby to decrease the transition times of low transition levels.

    • An improved method and system for separating chrominance and luminance information in a quadrature modulated color television signal and similar periodic signals is disclosed. A comb filter selectively separates chrominance and luminance components from the video signal and provides a combed chrominance output and an adaptively combed luminance output. A low frequency luminance vertical transition detector is connected to an input and detects vertical amplitude transitions occurring at adjacent horizontal scanning lines and produces a first switching signal independent of the direction of a particular transition. A second transition detector detects the simultaneous occurrence of transitions in chrominance and high frequency luminance in either direction above predetermined minimum threshold values to provide a second switching signal. A subcarrier frequency-band reject filter in the luminance path, connected to be responsive to one or both of the first and second switching signals, selects subcarrier frequency band rejected luminance in lieu of combed luminance during an internal corresponding to one or both of the switching signals. The system may further or alternatively include a switch connected to switch to chrominance bandpass filtered video in lieu of combed chrominance during the interval of one or both of the first or second switching signals.
