    • A method of and apparatus for discriminating sharp edge transitions produced during optical scanning, as by a CCD or the like, of differently reflective regions of a surface, such as copper conductors and resist background on printed circuit boards and similar applications, through delaying N successive sampling signals defining the edge transition of the desired edge transition regions slope and amplitude from unwanted reflections from other regions, subtracting each camera scan sampling signal from the previous Nth sample signal to produce a large difference signal only for the edge transitions, and adding such difference to the camera output signals to provide a distinctive boost to the edge transition signals which are then thresholded in a manner to insure rejection of signals from unwanted or spurious reflection regions into binary output signals unambiguously indentifying the edge transitions.

    • A system is provided for determining the widths and spacings of substantially parallel opaque stripes on a substrate, wherein the stripes are separated by openings. The system comprises a light source for illuminating the substrate and photodetecting means positioned to receive light from the illuminated substrate. Means are included for scanning the photodetecting means transverse to the stripes and for sweeping the photodetecting means in a direction substantially parallel to the stripes. The system further includes means for converting the output of the photodetecting means into a quantized signal, means for dividing the quantized signal into separate signals representing stripe widths and opening widths between stripes, and means for converting the stripe width and opening width signals into a signal representing center-to-center spacing between openings.

    • The invention proposes an electro-optical measurement system to be used to measure the width and possibly also the thickness of a strip 14 being rolled. The strip is imaged onto an electro-optical transducer each of which views the whole width of the strip. To compensate for inaccuracies resulting from the imaging system, a calibration of the imaging system is effected by means of a grid of known dimensions. The calibration results are recorded during a setting up process and used by a digital or analogue computer to correct any measurements taken by the imaging system during operation. There is also disclosed an improved technique for edge detection and for processing video data in real time.
