    • A turbine engine monitoring system is provided which disposes a data storage device in permanent association with an engine being monitored. The data storage device comprises an electrically erasable programmable read-only memory which is contained in an enclosure and permanently attached to the engine. A connection link is provided to connect the memory device in signal communication with an external device, such as an engine control unit. The engine control unit is connected in signal communication with a plurality of transducers that enable the engine control unit to monitor the operational status of a plurality of parameters relating to the turbine engine. By permanently attaching the data storage device to the turbine engine, a lifetime information of the turbine engine can be maintained in permanent association with the turbine engine regardless of replacement of the turbine engine or its related engine control unit.

    • An emergency power unit for providing emergency on board power to an aircraft having apparatus for heating the oxidizing gas contained in the oxidizing gas bottle includes a fuel supply source (14) for supplying fuel, and oxidizing gas bottle (12) containing pressurized oxidizing gas, an oxidizing gas heating device (18) and (20) for heating the pressurized oxidizing gas within the oxidizing gas bottle (12) by using heat energy generated by a combustor (16) wherein the combustor (16) causes combustion of a mixture of fuel and oxidizing gas heated by the oxidizing gas heating device (18) and (20). Hot gases resulting from the combustion of the mixture of fuel and heated oxidizing gas drive the blades of a turbine (32) thereby producing emergency on board power to the aircraft.

    • Engine start capability may be added to an aircraft generating system including a variable speed, constant frequency inverter 34 by placing transistors 48 in shunt relation to diodes 22 forming part of a full wave rectifier for rectifying A.C. power from a brushless generator output winding 10 which is normally supplied to the inverter 34 for conversion to constant frequency A.C. power. A source of D.C. power 60 may be connected to the diodes 22 and transistors 48 and the latter are operated by an inverter controller 52 to convert the D.C. power so provided to alternating current to be fed to the brushless generator output windings 10 and cause the brushless generator to operate as an A.C. motor for the starting of a turbine engine 18 or the like.

    • The invention is an electric starting system for starting aircraft jet engines (32), (34) and (36) using an APU (10) free turbine driven generator (12). The operating power factor of the starter-generator (12) is controlled during start mode operation of the APU (10) by monitoring the line current via a current transformer (58). Contactors (14) and (16) connect the generator (12) into the aircraft's ac power system and ac starting system, respectively. A master start relay (22) is provided, and is closed in the `start` mode such that a power electronics inverter (24) may be powered from external power via contactors (18). The variable-voltage/variable-frequency output of inverter (24) is controlled via a logic controller (26) and can be applied sequentially to the three engine driven generators (32), (34) and (36) via start relays (42), (44) and (46) to start the engines (32), (34) and (36) respectively. An alternative embodiment of the APU generator/power electronics/starter-generator start system is the utilization of a separate induction motor starter than can operate with or without the use of power electronics.
