    • An air conditioner for use in a vehicle includes a housing having air inlet and outlet openings. Air is introduced into the housing through the air inlet openings and processed air is ultimately ventilated out of at least one air outlet opening. An air fan is provided to be in communication with the air inlet openings and is located in the housing. The air fan blows intaken air toward a heating means which subsequently warms the air. The assembly further includes an air damper which controls the amount of air which is forced through the heating means. Additionally, a cool air duct having inlet and outlet openings is provided in the assembly such that the inlet opening of the duct is located upstream from the heating means. Thus, air entering the cool air inlet opening bypasses the heating means and never mixes with warm air from the heating means, resulting in this air being ventilated through the outlet openings as cold air. The warm air ventilated through the outlet openings is directed toward a lower body portion of the passenger, while the cool air ventilated through the outlet openings is directed toward an upper body portion of a passenger.

    • An air conditioner for a vehicle has a heater core for heating air blown from upstream thereof and discharging the heated air downstream thereof. An air passage is arranged in parallel with the heater core, and the air flow through the heater core and the air passage is controlled by a rotatable damper. A first chamber is provided downstream of the heater core and air passage for mixing the heated air from the heater core with non-heated air from the air passage. A second chamber is provided downstream of the first chamber for distributing the mixed air to a ventilation diffuser and/or to a third chamber. The third chamber can distribute the air alternatively to a defroster or a heater diffuser. Closable bypass passages are provided directly connecting the discharge end of the heater core with the third chamber, so that extra heated air may be moved directly to the third chamber when desired, thereby allowing the passenger to have cool air around his head and heated air around his legs.

    • An air conditioning system 120 for supplying air conditioned air to a passenger compartment 116 of a motor vehicle 110 is disclosed having left and right hand side distribution ducts 111L, 111R connected to a blower 122 by a common distribution chamber 121. The blower 122 is used to cause air to flow through the common distribution chamber 121 into the left and right hand side distribution ducts 111L, 111R via an air conditioning unit 123. Each of the distribution ducts 111L, 111R includes a distribution valve 130L, 130R used to vary the flow through the respective distribution duct 111L, 111R and through a dump duct 112L, 112R that exhausts air outside of a passenger compartment 116 of the motor vehicle 110. Each of the dump ducts 112L, 112R has the same resistance to flow as the respective distribution duct 111L, 111R to which it is connected. The flow from the distribution ducts 111L, 111R is adjusted by varying the proportion of air that flows through the cooperating dump duct 112L, 112R without affecting the flow from the other distribution duct 111R, 111L or requiring the blower speed to be altered. In one embodiment the dump ducts 112L, 112R exhaust air into a luggage compartment 117 of the motor vehicle 110.
