    • An orthopedic device is presented which comprise a horizontal base and a vertical support. The vertical support is connected toward the rear end of the horizontal base by a pivot mechanism and a tension mechanism. The pivot mechanism may include slots which allow the position of the vertical support to be adjusted. The tension mechanism may be a band such as an o-ring which is connected to both a first protrusion on the vertical support and a second protrusion on the rear end of the horizontal base. A locking mechanism may also be present to further connect the vertical support to the horizontal base.

    • A brace for augmenting extension of a user's limb about a joint comprises an upper arm pivotably attached to a lower arm. At least one compression element is attached to at least one of the upper and lower arms, and a substantially inelastic tensioning element is affixed to the other of the upper and lower arms over at least one tensioning member. Applying a force to bend the brace to a flexed position loads the compression element, and upon removal of the flexing force the compression element applies a restoring force to urge the brace back to the extended position. The compression element may comprise a hydraulic tension spring comprising at least one cylinder having a sealed portion defining a liquid containment space, and a piston comprising a compressing portion having a smaller diameter than the cylinder and extending axially through a hydraulic seal into the liquid containment space. A guide for maintaining the piston oriented axially relative to the frame maintains piston alignment so that when the frame is fixed in place and tension is applied to the tensioning member, the compressing portion of the piston rod intrudes further into the liquid containment space, compressing the hydraulic fluid and loading the spring.

    • A nasal dilator of vertically laminated layers, each consisting of one or more components. The laminated layers form a unitary truss with end regions for engaging outer wall tissues of a user's nasal passages and for traversing the bridge of the nose. The dilator includes means to direct its resilient properties comprising material separations or shape discontinuities formed in at least one region of the truss and extending through at least one layer of the dilator. Said material separations or discontinuities may comprise an opening, relief cut, slit or notch, and may be configured to separate or vertically protrude from the dilator when it is in use. The separations transform the angle of focused delaminating spring biasing forces generated by the resilient layer from primarily peel forces into primarily shear forces, and further redistribute the transformed forces to tissue-engaging surface areas extending outward and beyond the separations.

    • An orthotic device according to embodiments of the present invention includes a substantially rigid internal footbed with an external rocker bottom, two struts rigidly coupled to the footbed, a paddle coupled to each strut, each paddle having an inner surface configured to face a limb of a patient, and a strap system configured to interface with the paddles for tightening around the limb, the inner surfaces of the paddles including a plurality of protrusions configured to minimize sliding of the first and second paddles with respect to the limb or with respect to a cast applied to the limb. The orthotic device may include two or more support layers on the footbed, each layer having a support aperture larger than and at least partially overlapping the support aperture below.
