    • Structures are provided in lenticular display material such as used in application to automobile headlamp light and the like. The structures include molded, extruded or embossed plastic or glass which is formed with a plurality of irregular surface formations such as cavities, short or elongated protrusions defining irregular surface formations in or against which dirt or dust may collect and form light blocking material which substantially reduces the efficiency of the reflector or display. The new and improved structures provided herein include the provision of a coating or covering sheet of suitable transparent material which retains the interface defined by the irregular surface formations in the lens sheet or reflector so that it may properly continue to function substantially as intended.

    • An apparatus and method are provided for forming large filament reinforced composite bodies. In one form a substrate is formed by rotational molding a plastic material in a mold cavity after which the molding is removed from the cavity and placed in a filament winding fixture wherein filamentary material is wound thereon to provide substantial reinforcement for the article and strengthen the outer stratum thereof. In a particular form, the rotational molding contains a rigid tubular member extending therethrough and secure therein during the rotational molding process and is utilized for the purpose of supporting the rotational molding in the filament winding fixture. In another form, an inflatable substrate is constructed with a rod or tubular member extending therethrough which member is utilized to support the inflated member in a filament winding fixture. Plastic and filamentary material are disposed against the inflated outer surface of the inflatable member in a winding operation which forms a hard, filament reinforced shell on its outer surface. In a particular form, a hard plastic material is spray deposited or otherwise formed on the outer surface of the inflated member while it is rotated in a fixture and after a self supporting shell is formed thereof, glass fibers or other filamentary material is wound against the hard shell as it is rotated in a filament winding fixture.

    • A propeller driven toy is provided which is powered by a rubber band motor rotating a propeller which exerts a pushing thrust on the toy. The toy is in the form of a vehicle adapted to be driven across a surface as the rubber band motor unwinds. A lightweight body is composed of upper and lower body portions including a pod protruding above and to the rear of the lower body portion and containing the rubber band motor extending at least partially therethrough. The propeller is located at the rear of the pod beyond the rear end of the lower body portion. A motorized winding device for the propeller is also provided to rapidly condition the rubber band motor to drive the toy.

    • A record system and method for recording and reproducing information relative to record cards is provided wherein the information is in the form of optically scannable parallel tracks containing recordings therein which are defined by variations in the surface topography of the record tracks.A narrow beam of radiation such as that generated by a laser or an electron beam gun is modulated with information such as a video picture signal or digital information and is caused to scan the surface of a record card to generate either a variable topography represented by variations in the widths and/or depths of the narrow recording area of a record track caused by variations in the intensity of the beam of radiation as the beam is deflected to scan the recording track or the card is automatically moved to effect scanning by the beam. The beam may be operable to vaporize or otherwise variably erode and cause a groove or a series of cavities to be formed along the record track wherein the shape and/or depth of the cavities or separations therein represent electro-optically scannable information such as full-frame video picture signals, digital information and the like. In another form, the card may be coated with an erodable material which is vaporized or otherwise eroded to effect information recordings therein.

    • An automatic scanning and control apparatus determines the location of a predetermined segment of an image field being scanned. The predetermined segment presents an image which is optically differentiatable from the surrounding area of the image field. The apparatus includes a beam device for selectively scanning the image field and producing an output signal thereof. The beam device includes means for modulating the output signal in accordance with variations in the image field. The predetermined segment of the image field causes modulation of the output signal of the beam device by providing an inflection therein when the beam scans across the segment. An analyzing circuit is adapted to accept the output signal from the beam device. Means generate a locating signal in predetermined time relation to the scanning. Comparator means compare the inflection in the output signal with the locating signal so that the location of the predetermined segment of the image field can be determined.A method compares an image field to be inspected with a standard image field. A standard image field is scanned with a beam and a video signal is modulated in accordance with intensity variations in the standard field. The video signal is recorded on a recording member. The field to be inspected is then scanned by the beam and a second video signal is generated. Both the video signals are reproduced and passed to a comparator means. A point to point comparison is made between the inflections and variations in each signal resulting from the scanning image areas of contrasting intensity of generating pulse signals during the intervals that the areas do not coincide. The pulse signals are then automatically analyzed.

    • A record playback unit for recordings on magnetic tapes disposed both in endless loop formations in cartridges and in reel-to-reel cassettes, wherein both are insertable into a single opening in the playback unit. A transducer and drive wheel assembly for the tape of the cassette is normally positioned to be inserted into the opening in the edge wall of the cassette together with a drive wheel for the tape of the cassette.When a cartridge is inserted, its upper forward edge is detected by a limit switch, which is not actuated by an inserted cassette. The limit switch controls a solenoid or motor causing the cassette drive and transducer assembly to retract out of the way of the cartridge, to permit the cartridge to be pushed fully into the housing and to engage the cartridge-contained tape with a drive wheel and transducer at the far end of the housing. When a magnetic tape cassette is inserted into the opening and pushed to the far end thereof, it operates a second limit switch which causes the solenoid to advance the cassette drive unit consisting of a rotatable member, which is inserted into the cassette behind the tape, to cooperate with a common drive wheel for both the cassette and cartridge tapes and also engages respective drive means for the reels of the tape in the cassette into engagement with the reel hubs of the cassette. Removal of the cassette from the opening is effected by pulling or pushing on the cassette, which activates a further limit switch or manually closing a further limit switch operating the solenoid to retract the cassette drive unit out of the way of the cassette, so that the cassette may be removed from the housing.

    • An intelligent material unit formed of an intelligent gel encapsulated within an enclosure. When the gel is actuated by a change in temperature thereof, such as heat and/or by an externally applied field such as an electrical current, electric field, magnetic field, ultrasonic energy (or sonic), microwave energy, a laser beam or a combination thereof, at least a portion of the wall of the container or enclosure is deformed to perform a mechanical function or operation such as that of an artificial heart valve. The valve may have a toroidal base defining an interior aperture and a plurality of hollow, flexible flaps each having an edge attached to the toroidal base and overlapping the entire interior aperture of the toroidal base. Each flexible flap is filled with a gel with an electrode operably attached to the gel in each of the flexible flaps. This enables the flaps to be made flexible or rigid in response to voltage applied to the gel.
