    • A liquid crystal display includes a first display panel including a first substrate and a lower alignment layer formed on the first substrate, a second display panel that includes a second substrate facing the first substrate to maintain a predetermined cell gap between the substrates and an upper alignment layer formed on the second substrate, a liquid crystal layer provided between the first and second display panels, a wide view polarizer and a lower polarizer sequentially attached to the outside of the first display panel, and an upper polarizer attached to the outside of the second display panel. An absorption axis of the wide view polarizer is inclined with respect to an absorption axis of the lower polarizer by 45°. An absorption axis C′ inclined with respect to the absorption axis A′ of the lower polarizer by 45° is interposed between the lower polarizer and the liquid crystal panel in the backlit electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) mode.

    • A substrate for a display apparatus includes a plate, a switching element, an insulating layer, and a partition wall. The plate has a reflection region on which a light that is provided from an exterior to the substrate is reflected and a transmission region through which a light generated from a backlight assembly passes. The switching element is on the plate. The insulating layer is on the plate having the switching element. The transmission region of the insulating layer is recessed when compared to the reflection region of the insulating layer. The insulating layer has a contact hole through which a first electrode of the switching element is partially exposed. The partition wall divides the transmission region into a plurality of transmission portions. Advantageously, an image display quality of the display apparatus is improved, and manufacturing cost is decreased.

    • A liquid crystal display, in accordance with the present invention, includes a first substrate having a thin film transistor and a first electrode formed thereon. The first electrode is electrically connected to the thin film transistor. A first insulating layer is formed on the first substrate including the thin film transistor and the first electrode and a window is formed in the first insulating layer, the window exposing a predetermined region of the first electrode. A second electrode is provided on the first insulating layer and electrically connected to the first electrode. A second substrate includes a third electrode formed thereon. A first gap is formed between a surface of the third electrode and a surface of the predetermined region of the first electrode, and a second gap is formed between the surface of the third electrode and a surface of the second electrode. A liquid crystal layer is interposed between the first gap and the second gap. Other embodiments are included as well as methods for forming the liquid crystal display of the present invention.
