    • A photographic camera including a picture size switching device adapted to switch the picture size between a regular size, for example, of 36 mm.times.24 mm and a panoramic size, for example, of 65 mm.times.24 mm, wherein, when it is intended to switch the picture size, a predetermined quantity of a roll of film is fed or rewound so that a space of a predetermined extent may be generated between the adjacent previously exposed film frame and the following film frame to be exposed and thereby multiple exposure as well as wastefulness of the film may be avoided. Additionally disclosed is a photographic camera of the so-called preliminary take-up type including a picture size switching device having a spool for taking up the entire roll of film contained within a cartridge in order to measure a full length of the roll of film so that a film quantity rewound during shutter release and a film quantity fed or rewound during changeover of the picture size may be subtracted from the full length of the roll of film to determine a residual film length based on which the number of film frames still available for photographing in the selected picture size may be calculated. The number of film frames may then be displayed to reliably inform a user of the number of frames remaining.

    • A film transporter is coupled to a counter which counts the number of used film frames. A film detector detects a film when the count signal is "0," i.e., a state where the counter for counting the number of used film frames is reset. When it is detected that the camera has no film roll loaded therein, the film transporter is disabled to advance or rewind the film roll. There is provided a film travel detector adapted to stop further travel of the film roll after the number of pulses output every time the film roll travels by one frame has reached a predetermined number and, when the camera has the film roll loaded therein, the predetermined number is changed depending whether the count signal is "0," so that a common control system effects initial film advance and advance of each frame following the initial film advance.

    • A zoom lens system shifts the position of front and rear lens groups relative to each other in the direction of the optical axis to change its focal length, by moving a lens barrel back and forth in the axial direction. The lens barrel is formed with cutouts in its rear portion for receiving therein parts and elements projecting forwardly from the plane in which an exposure aperture is located when the lens barrel is retracted, so as to reduce the thickness of the camera with the retracted zoom lens. A focal length changing mechanism comprises a fixed cam and a lever attached to the lens barrel which is turned by the cam when the lens barrel moves back and forth to shift one lens group, thereby changing the focal length of the zoom lens to desired focal lengths. To correct the changes in focus of the zoom lens caused by the change of focal length, an adjusting member is provided in the focal length changing mechanism. An encoder is provided in the camera to detect the shifted axial positions of the lens barrel.
