    • A luminaire with directional side-light extraction comprises a light pipe with a light-carrying core.     • An optical coupling assembly is useful for coupling a source of light, having high brightness and being non-coherent and focussed at a focal plane, to a plurality of optical light conductors. The coupling assembly includes an elongated light transmissive coupling member which has a central longitudinal axis and is disposed between the focal plane of the light source and leading ends of the optical light conductors. The coupling member includes oppositely flared front and rear end portions and a middle portion disposed along the longitudinal axis, with the middle portion extending between and connected to the front and rear end portions. The coupling member can have either a solid or tubular configuration. The middle portion of the coupling member has cylindrical shape and cross-sectional size of uniform dimensions and being less than the respective cross-sectional sizes of an inlet end of the front end portion and an outlet end of the rear end portion. The front end portion of the coupling member can have either a frusto-conical or parabolic shape, whereas the rear end portion can have a frusto-conical or parabolic shape being oriented in the reverse of the frusto-conical or parabolic shape of the front end portion. The rear end portion has a greater axial length than the front end portion and the outlet end of the rear end portion is larger in size than the inlet end of the front end portion.

    • An illumination system is disclosed which serves to reduce the divergence of a light beam exiting a small diameter optical fiber from what it was upon entering the optical fiber and is particularly suited for automotive forward lighting applications. The illumination system comprises a spherical reflector, a light source, an optical fiber, a hemispherical lens, and an air gap between the planar surface of the hemispherical lens and the output face of the optical fiber. The spherical reflector allows a light beam from the light source to be introduced into the input face of the optical fiber over a wide angle in order to minimize the diameter of the optical fiber. An air gap exists between the planar surface of the hemispherical lens and the output face of the optical fiber that together with the lens are effective in reducing the angular divergence of the beam from what it was upon entering the input face of the optical fiber. The smaller diameter fiber has the advantages of a lighter weight, less cost, greater design flexibility, and ease of manipulation compared to a thicker fiber.

    • In this automobile lighting system there is (i) a light source that develops light when in an "on" state, (ii) an elongated light guide that has an input end for receiving light from the source and an output end to which this light is transmitted by the light guide, (iii) an indicating device at the output end for controlling the passage of light from the output end to a location exterior to the automobile, and (iv) a lens located between the indicating device and the exterior location for receiving light passing through the indicating device from the light guide output end. The indicating device comprises a shutter having an opaque portion, a light blocking position in which the opaque portion blocks the passage of light from the output end to the lens, and a non-blocking position in which light is allowed to pass through the indicating device to the lens. The indicating device also includes shutter-actuating means for shifting the shutter between its light-blocking position and its non-blocking position while the light source remains in its "on" state.
