    • A method is provided for loading stacked food product into packages. Open top containers are arranged in rows and movable into a loading station. A shuttle conveyor has a retractable and extendable conveying surface, the conveying surface having an end region extendable to a position arranged above the containers of a row of the containers. A guiding and pushing apparatus is arranged above the row and includes guides that are lowered to capture a row of stacked food products on the conveying surface, and plungers within the guides that lower and press a top of the stacks. When the conveying surface is retracted from beneath the guides and the row of containers, the guides are lowered further, adjacent to the containers, and the plungers are lowered with respect to the guides to push the stacks into the containers.

    • A mold plate for use in a reciprocating mold plate patty-forming apparatus includes a flat body having a plurality of cavities for forming patties. The flat body has a fill side face and an opposite face. A grid pattern of grooves is formed on the second face extending longitudinally and laterally on the second face. The pattern extends a lateral distance that is about equivalent to an overall patty cavity field width. Longitudinal and lateral slots that penetrate though a thickness of the mold plate and flow connect fill side pressure and meat with the pattern of grooves on the second face to balance the pressure on the opposite faces of the flat body.

    • An apparatus is provided for filling food product drafts into packages. A supply of open top containers are arranged in rows and carried by an elongated web of film and are movable by the web into a fill station. A shuttle conveyor has a retractable and extendable conveying surface, the conveying surface arranged above the fill station and having an end region extendable to a position arranged to deposit food product drafts into the containers of the first row by circulation of the conveying surface. The conveying surface is retractable, or extendable, to reposition the end to a position arranged to deposit food product drafts carried on the conveying surface into the containers of the second row and each subsequent row. A tamping apparatus is carried by the conveyor to retract or extend with the conveying surface end. The tamping apparatus has vertically reciprocal tamping elements arranged above the respective row being filled with food product drafts, the tamping elements actuated to press the food product drafts into the containers.

    • The invention provides a slicing and conveying system that includes a slicing blade that cuts slices from a loaf, and an output conveyor located below the slicing blade for receiving the slices in a draft. A control system automatically adjusts a lateral movement of the output conveyor to form a laterally shingled draft of a consistent width in response to a sensed lateral dimension of the loaf being sliced. The control system includes a displacement sensor carried by a laterally adjustable guide assembly adjacent to the slicing blade. The displacement sensor is signal-connected to a control. The control is signal-connected to the output conveyor to control the lateral movement of the output conveyor according to the lateral dimension of the loaf sensed by the displacement sensor. As an additional aspect, the slices can be shingled in the longitudinal direction to form a two dimensional footprint. A length sensor can sense the length of the shingled draft and send a feedback signal to the control to make adjustments to the longitudinal movement of the output conveyor to adjust the degree of longitudinal shingling.

    • A mold plate assembly for a patty-forming apparatus includes a reciprocating mold plate having patty-forming cavities, with at least two rows of cavities aligned in a longitudinal direction, and a fill hole located rearwardly of the cavities. The assembly includes a bottom fill plate and a top fill plate structure arranged facing opposite sides of the mold plate. The mold plate reciprocates between a cavity fill position and a patty discharge or knock-out position. Outlet slots are arranged through the top fill plate structure to deliver food product into said mold cavities when the mold plate is in the fill position. During filling of food product into the cavities, a pressurized food product flow distribution path is established through the bottom fill plate, through the fill hole of the mold plate, through the top fill plate structure, through the outlet slots and into the cavities. The fill hole is reciprocated between an open and a closed position with the mold plate, to either allow food product into the mold cavities when the mold plate is in the fill position, or to prevent flow through the outlet slots when the mold plate is in the closed position. The mold plate assembly allows for the use of multiple rows of cavities in the mold plate and ensures consistent filling in both the rearward and forward rows of cavities.

    • A high speed food patty molding machine capable of handling whole-fiber food products has two food pumps, each pump having a cavity with an inlet at once end, an outlet at the other end, and a plunger movable through the cavity. The two pump cavities are located adjacent to each other and separated by a common wall; a moldable food product is supplied into the inlet of each pump cavity. A manifold connects the outlets of the two pump cavities to a molding mechanism; a pump drive reciprocates the pump plungers in overlapping alternation and a valve seals off the outlet of each pump cavity whenever the plunger of that pump is moving toward its retracted refill position, so that there is a continuous pressurized supply of food product to the molding mechanism. Each pump cavity outlet is located at the juncture of the cavities common separation wall and the discharge end of its cavity. The outlets merge to form a common inlet to center of the manifold. A rotary valve member in the manifold inlet is reciprocally rotated between one operating position in which one pump cavity outlet is closed and the other pump cavity outlet is opened and another operating position in which the pump cavity outlet conditions are reversed. the food product must make a greater change of direction to flow to the portion of the manifold closer to the open outlet than to the portion of the manifold farther away from that outlet.
