    • An image reading device of the type in which a display panel is laid over a document table and an image on an original document is input through the display panel. In the image reading device, the display panel is a liquid crystal panel of the transmission type in which liquid crystal/polymer composite material is sandwiched by electrodes, and at least one of the electrodes sandwiching the liquid crystal/polymer composite material consists of a plurality of divided electrodes. Further, a gap between the adjacent divided electrodes is shorter than a minimum resolution distance in a location of the display panel of the image reading device. Alternatively, an electrode layer may be provided covering the gap between the adjacent divided electrodes in a state that an insulating layer is layered between the electrode layer and the gap. The ends of the divided electrodes may overlap with each other, with an insulating layer being layered therebetween. In this case, no gap is present between the adjacent divided electrodes. A distance t between the display panel and the document table is preferably 3 mm.ltoreq.t.ltoreq.30 mm.

    • An optical recording medium having a layer of recording material provided on a substrate, the material having an optical property which is changed reversibly by means of light or heat, so that writing/reproducing or writing/reproducing/erasing of information is performed by using the reversible change of the optical property of the recording material layer. The recording material is composed of a plurality of elements and is capable of taking, as a melt state thereof, a selected one of a single phase state and a two-phase coexistent state. An optical recording method for performing writing/reproducing/erasing of information uses a reversible change of an optical property of the recording material layer by irradiating the recording material layer with a high-power light beam so as to melt it into a single phase state and then cooling the recording material layer so as to form a phase-changed portion corresponding to a recording state or an erasing state. The recording material layer is irradiated with a low-power light beam so as to be melted into a two-phase coexistence state and then cooled so as to form a phase-changed portion corresponding to an erasing state or a recording state.

    • Deletion of a particular message in a file unit is accomplished for those messages with deletion set code in a file directory displayed on a screen. Operation of the deletion of a message includes (a) depression of a "deletion" key for indicating a file directory on a screen, (b) designating messages to be deleted by depression of a deletion set/reset key to change a deletion set/reset code to a set code, and (c) execution of deletion by the depression of a "deletion execution" key to delete a message with said deletion set code. A file directory indicated on a screen includes a deletion set/reset code, a message number, nature of a message, length of a message, and first 60 characters of a message, which simplifies identification of a message to be deleted.
