    • A transaction card is described in which data representing an identifiable image can be stored in a limited amount of storage space. The image to be stored is converted to an associated matrix of pixel values. The matrix of pixel values is partitioned into a plurality of ordered image portions corresponding to a like partitioning of the image. The partitioning is generally related to feature locations in the image. Each image portion is compared with a reference set of image portions represented by pixel groups. Associated with each pixel group is a signal group. For each image portion, a signal group is chosen for the associated reference pixel group that most closely matches with the pixel image portion. The signal groups representing the matrix of pixel values or the image to be stored are stored as bit patterns on the storage space of a transaction card. The bit patterns may then be read and converted to the signal groups. From the signal groups, a reference pixel group is identified from within a reference set and the reference pixel group is positioned with respect to the image at the same location as the image portion. Using this technique, a recognizable image can be constructed from image information compatible with the ISO-7811/2 standards.

    • In a printing system with multiple printheads, a spot of ink is created on a recording medium using up to N drops of ink fired from an ejector of one of the printheads. Each printhead has an array of ejectors. A single power supply drives the ejectors of the multiple printheads. Each of the printheads delivers a single color such as cyan, magenta, yellow, or black. A memory, which is coupled to the multiple printheads, records a printfile. Values in the printfile record channel values. Each channel value specifies how many drops of ink to deliver onto the recording medium over a spot cycle. The spot cycles of the multiple printheads, which consist of one to N actuation intervals, are desynchronized by operating the spot cycles out of phase with each other. The spot cycles of two printheads, for example, are desynchronized by beginning the spot cycle of one printhead a non-multiple of N drops prior to beginning the spot cycle of the other printhead. Desynchronizing the spot cycles of the printheads reduces the peak power requirements of the printheads by lowering the peak average consumption during any actuation interval of a spot cycle of the acoustic printing system.

    • Techniques for multiple verification of transaction cards incorporating digital image information and authorization data onto a transaction card to assist in the card verification process. This technique requires the authorized card holder to have a picture identification accompany the application for the card. Picture information is converted to a digital image that is stored and used in one or a plurality of means for verifying that the presenter of the card, at the point of the transaction, is the authorized user. Such means include visual comparison of card presenter and extracted digital image information and verification that the data has not been altered. Encryption of the data, as it is read from the card, at the point of origin is used to formulate encoded authorization data that is then compared against like encoded authorized card holder data stored at a centrally located data base.
