    • The present invention relates to the altering or controlling inhibition of gene expression in a cell using a methodology involving a dsRNA. The use of the method in plants and plant cells has been found to be particularly beneficial. For example the inhibition of a hormone signaling gene in a plant, such as the EIN2 gene, permits the modulating of flower longevity in the selected plant. This is accomplished by using our RNAi technology in inhibiting the expression of an ethylene-modulated gene or an ethylene signaling gene in plants and plant cells. This method provides for the use of RNAi technology in inhibiting the expression of a hormone signaling gene in a plant, particularly in the floral parts of a plant. Thus, one can modulate flower longevity in a plant.

    • Java™ Development Toolkit version 1.1.x (JDK) does not support the serialization of images. JDK on the other hand allows primitive data types to be serialized. This means that an application developer can design an application so that any primitive data type objects, including objects comprising primitive data type components, can be written to a file or another area of memory, before an application closes. When the application re-opens, the primitive data types can be de-serialized and so recovered and the application can continue as if it had never closed with the exception that image objects will not have been recovered. The invention discloses a component for a development kit comprising means for converting an image object into a primitive data type object and means for serializing that object so that the object can be made persistent. In a preferred embodiment, the component converts an image object to an array of integers representing the image pixels; creates a color table of unique integers from the integer array; converts each integer in the integer array into an index into the color table; and zip compresses the combined color table and array of indices before serialization.

    • The present invention relates to the electrophoretic separation of bio-organic molecules using a slab gel electrophoresis apparatus having a pair of spaced, confronting plates defining a multi-lane separation zone adapted to hold a separation medium and an upper loading zone. In one aspect of the invention, at least one of the plates is shaped to provide an expanded loading zone. The plate-to-plate distance within the expanded loading zone is greater than the plate-to-plate width within the separation zone. In another aspect of the invention, a comb is provided with each tooth having a gradual taper beginning at a support member and extending along most of the tooth's longitudinal axis, and a sharp taper beginning immediately beyond the gradual taper and extending to the end of the tooth. In a related aspect of the invention, a method is provided wherein a comb is inserted into the loading zone so that the teeth penetrate an upper portion of the separation medium, thereby forming a series of fluid-tight, elongate sample-loading apertures of substantially rectangular cross-section having a plate-to-plate width greater than that of the inter-plate distance in the separation zone.

The fixation device comprises an elongated, relatively rigid stabilizing member of biocompatible material sized to pass from the medial side of the first metatarsal through the first and second metatarsals and out the lateral side of the second metatarsal, and two retainer members cooperating with the segments of the stabilizing member, medial to the first metatarsal and lateral to the second, adapted to prevent migration of the stabilizing member as the wound is healing.
