    • A testing method or apparatus utilizes multiple frequencies applied to a device under test for measuring newly discovered frequency modulation effects. An embodiment may include a lower frequency signal with a smaller amplitude higher frequency signal to test a dynamic change in frequency response, gain, and or phase. This dynamic test can reveal frequency modulation effects. Another embodiment may include the use of a multiple frequency signal to dynamically induce a time varying phase or frequency distortion for the device that has differential phase distortion. The device's output is then measured with an FM detector or spectrum analysis system to measure a shift in one of the frequencies used in the test signal or to measure frequency modulation effects of any signals, including distortion products, from the device. Yet another embodiment of the invention may include biasing a device with a voltage to span the output voltage range of the device while measuring harmonic or intermodulation distortion or phase or frequency response at the various operating points.

    • Enhancements to a video anticopying process that causes an abnormally low amplitude video signal to be recorded on an illegal copy. In one version, positive going pulses are added to the video signal. The enhancements in one version introduce into the overscan portion of the television picture, just prior to the horizontal or vertical sync signals but in active video, a negative going waveform that appears to the television receiver or videotape recorder to be a sync signal, thereby causing an early horizontal or vertical retrace. One version provides (in the right overscan portion of the picture), a checker pattern of alternating gray and black areas which causes the TV set on which the illegal copy is played to horizontally retrace earlier than normal in selected lines with a consequential horizontal shift of the picture information on those lines. This substantially degrades picture viewability. In another version a gray pattern at the bottom overscan portion of the picture causes vertical picture instability. In another version selected horizontal sync signals are narrowed, causing irregular vertical retraces. Also provided is apparatus for removing or attenuating these enhancements from the video signal, to allow copying.

    • A television (TV) monitor or receiver normally displays only the active portion of a video signal, and generally the HBI (horizontal blanking interval) and/or the VBI (vertical blanking interval) are not displayed. In some TV displays however, there is provision to display at least a portion of a blanking interval (overscan area). In some displays (such as monitors for professional use) the VBI is displayed as a way to allow the user to monitor test, command, and/or reference signals. If there are added pulses such as the well known copy protection signals present in blanking intervals of the video signal that cause a horizontal (or vertical) timing or recovery circuit to result in erroneous timing, then viewing is impaired of at least one blanking interval for the TV display. For example, if added copy protection pulses in the VBI region cause the horizontal phase lock loop circuit in a TV display to cause a mistiming, then viewing of signals in the VBI (overscan area) will be impaired. Such signals may include test signals and/or sync signals. A method and apparatus disclosed here improve or correct timing in TV display circuits to allow better viewing of the blanking intervals. One such method is to reposition and/or to remove or modify at least one added or other pulse in the VBI and/or HBI.

    • A modified Colorstripe™ copy protection process utilizes a basic anti-copy protection (ACP) signal that causes attenuation of a video signal, wherein, in one embodiment, the process modifies (lowers) the level of a front porch portion and adds an incorrect color signal (color burst) in the region of the sync tip. When an illegal copy is made, a pre-blanked end of line portion causes a TV set to trigger the color burst sample pulse ahead of time and cause the incorrect color signal in the sync tip region to be sampled. Thus, since the sync tip region has incorrect color phase or frequency, the resulting illegal copy will have enhanced color distortions. In other embodiments, other portions of the horizontal blanking interval are lowered in level and incorrect color bursts are added to a portion or portions of the back porch and/or a portion of the front porch.A further embodiment employs lowering a back porch portion above a sync tip level near the beginning of a video line to form a pseudo sync/AGC pulse pair. The various embodiments of the process may include an adaptable process, as well as several alternative ACP signals for use in combination with the process.

    • Various techniques and associated embodiments are disclosed for providing defensive measures against “black boxes,” wherein the techniques utilize unconventional schemes for detecting the vertical blanking interval (VBI) of a video signal containing a copy protection signal. The unconventional schemes would be of particular interest to the black boxes, which must locate the VBI to generate a vertical rate signal in order to perform the task of illegally removing the copy protection signal. The unconventional schemes utilize the particular characteristics or peculiarities of the video signals in the VBI to detect the VBI and generate therefrom a reliable vertical or frame rate signal. The characteristics include various pulse spacings and/or pulse widths which may occur in specific lines in the VBI, and which may be detected to allow deriving the reliable vertical or frame rate signal. Alternatively, techniques for modifying the characteristic signals of the VBI also are disclosed to prevent the derivation of a correct or reliable vertical or frame rate signal utilizing the unconventional schemes of detection of previous mention. In a third alternative, the reliable vertical rate or frame signal is utilized to attenuate, defeat or otherwise modify an anti-copy protection signal or a normal video signal.

    • An improved method and apparatus for maintaining concealment for a scrambled signal when frequency pre-emphasis is used to defeat the scrambling. The pre-emphasis may be synthesized with high pass or peaking circuitry. More commonly however the pre-emphasis is available in television sets with a fine tuning control. By adjusting the fine tuning control to cause purposely mistuning off center, a peaking effect is generated which is used to counter the scrambled signal. The application discloses one embodiment which uses de-emphasis to counter the peaking effect. In another embodiment, signals added in the vicinity of the horizontal blanking interval causes the peaking effect to enhance these added signals over stable edges of the video signal. Since these added signals are position modulated for example, the television's sync circuits and horizontal oscillator circuits will cause scan circuits to generate position modulation. Thus adding a specific type of signal causes the peaking circuit to enlarge the added signals more than the other parts of the video signal for synchronization.

    • An improved television scrambling signal is achieved by adding erroneous clamp pulses into a television signal after the signal may have been previously scrambled, for example, by prior art position modulated horizontal sync pulses. Prior art scrambling systems such as those using position modulated sync pulses cause tearing in an unauthorized displayed television picture. The addition of the erroneous clamp pulses of the present invention causes both tearing and darkening of the picture. This darkening can completely shut off the display on some TV sets, thus yielding complete concealment of the television signal. In an alternative embodiment, an erroneous color “rainbow” effect is provided by modifying a portion of a color burst signal, to cause the color subcarrier system in a TV set to unlock. In another embodiment, an improved television vertical scrambling overlay method is achieved by using fewer lines for the insertion of fake vertical sync pulses in a vertical blanking interval and by turning on the fewer fake vertical pulses in a selected specific manner. This improvement provides greater vertical displacement for enhanced picture concealment while providing additional lines for other purposes.
