    • This invention relates to a container support pedestal for use in an all purpose intermodal flat rail car. More particularly, the invention relates to a container support pedestal which, between operative and stored positions, rotates approximately 45.degree. outwardly about a longitudinal axis of the rail car. The invention also relates to a support housing for the pedestal. In both the operative and stored positions, the pedestal substantially covers the slot in the platform of the rail car. In both positions, the pedestal is secured against longitudinal and transverse rotation. The invention also relates to a rail car with such a pedestal and housing.

    • A guide rail and support assembly for use in an aircraft cargo compartment for guiding cargo containers being transported by the aircraft cargo container transportation system uses a four bar mechanism to allow the guide rail to be lowered to accommodate wide cargo containers. The assembly lowers or retracts in response to being accidentally struck endwise by a cargo container, thereby avoiding damage to the cargo deck surface. The guide rail and support assembly uses a detent mechanism to prevent nuisance retractions while reliably retracting in response to endwise impact by a cargo container. The guide rail and support assembly is easily lowered manually when necessary to accommodate wider cargo containers, and is easily reset to the extended or upright position manually.

    • A stanchion or hitch for supporting a semi-trailer on a rail car includes a vertical support member having a base end and a top end with a fifth wheel attached to the top end. A base member is attached to the base end of the vertical support member. The base member includes a plurality of releasable connectors for attaching the base member to the bed of the rail car. The fifth wheel is pivotably attached to the vertical support member and includes a king pin protruding from a lower surface for enabling the fifth wheel to be coupled to a fifth wheel on a yard tractor. A diagonal brace extends between the base member and the vertical support member to prevent collapse of the vertical support member. The rail car bed is modified to accept the connectors on the base member in multiple positions so that the stanchion is selectably positionable at various locations on the rail car.

    • A locking pin assembly for locking an end of a cargo container onto the container-carrying platform of a transport vehicle. The assembly has a retractable locking pin movable between a fully rearwardly extended container-locking position and a fully forwardly retracted container-freeing position. The locking pin is movable between these two positions by manually swinging a pivoted operating lever which extends through a longitudinally elongated U-shaped slot in a rigidly immovable latching gate. A bias spring urges the operating lever into the ends of the U-shaped slot to latch the lever and hence latch the locking pin in the absence of manual pressure on the lever. De-latching of the operating lever and locking pin is accomplished by a single-handed operation involving merely pressing down on the lever, with de-latching being automatic on releasing the lever.A separate manual operation of the latching gate is not required, and being rigidly immovable, the latching gate cannot be dislodged by jolting of the transport vehicle.
