    • A magnetic reproducing apparatus which has a pair of main rotatable heads having different azimuth angles and a pair of auxiliary rotatable heads having different azimuth angles. When a magnetic tape is played back while it runs at a speed different from that at which it runs during a recording mode, playback output signals from the main and auxiliary rotatable heads are switched over to replace a reduction in the outputs from the main rotatable heads with the outputs from the auxiliary rotatable heads to produce a combined playback output signal. The combined playback output signal is passed through a variable delay line having a delay time varied by an output from a detector circuit which detects variations in horizontal synchronous signal intervals of the combined playback output signal. This varied delay time of the variable delay line can eliminate any skew distortions which would appear on a displayed image on the screen due to the variations in horizontal synchronous signal intervals of the combined playback output signal.

    • A time-axis correcting circuit for a recorded data reproducing device, such as a video tape player or video disc player, in which dominant and other time-axis errors are substantially completely suppressed. The reproduced signal is applied to the input of a variable delay circuit. A timing data component, such as the color burst signal, is separated from the delayed reproduced signal and applied to a flywheel oscillator, the open-loop oscillation frequency of which is set at least approximately to the frequency of a dominant time-axis error component to be suppressed. The output of the flywheel oscillator is applied through a voltage-controlled oscillator to the control input of the variable delay circuit.

    • A circuit for generating a constant reference oscillation from a video signal affected by a time error, comprising, a cut-off stage for receiving the video signal affected by the time error and outputting sync pulses and vertical sync pulses, a first frequency divider connected to the cutoff stage for receiving the vertical sync pulses and outputting divided frequency pulses and a first comparator stage connected to the first frequency divider for receiving the divided frequency pulses. The first comparator stage has an output connected to an oscillator and the oscillator, in turn, has an output connected to a second frequency divider which is also connected to an input of the first comparator stage. A second comparator stage is connected between the cutoff stage sync pulses and an output of the oscillator for producing an output and a clock oscillator is connected to the output and, in turn, is connected to a bucket chain which receives the video signal affected by the time error and outputs a video signal which is free of the time error.

    • Time base instability of signals in a train thereof is corrected by use of a frequency controlled delay device. As employed in the correction of time base instability of video signals, a charge-coupled delay device is used. The delay device is clocked by a frequency which is proportional to the reciprocal of the phase difference between a fluttering input signal and a reference synchronizing signal. This corrects errors caused by the nonlinear transfer characteristics of the delay device, i.e. the transit time through the device is porportional to the reciprocal of the frequency of the clock signal which controls the delay device.
