摘要： A novel optically readable message card having columns of marking areas thereon where the vertically adjacent marking areas in a column are horizontally staggered. Also, a template for the message card and having columns of horizontally staggered marking openings therein corresponding to the marking areas on the message card. The horizontal staggering arrangement assures that an unskilled user will make a sufficiently long mark in the marking area on the message card so that the mark can be read by commercially available optical mark reading equipment. Furthermore, the staggered openings in the template assure the structural strength of the template. Also, a structurally strong, easy-to-use template assembly including the template and a base plate designed to hold the message card and accurately align it with the template. Also, a method of economically mass-producing the template assemblies. Also an input switching circuit for converting a conventional optical mark reader to one which can read the novel message card.

摘要： a Bourdon tube is situated down hole in an oil well or the like, and has attached thereto a coded wheel which rotates an amount determined by the sensed down hole pressure. The wheel has a number of transparent and opaque concentric bands thereon which form a gray code pattern indicative of a selected range of pressures. A plurality of radiant energy transmitters are radially positioned on one side of the wheel in optical alignment with each of the respective bands. A plurality of radiant energy sensors are positioned and aligned in a like manner on the other side of the wheel for sensing the passing or blocking of the radiant energy by the respective bands formed on the wheel. Included is a digital logic circuit controlled by a temperature responsive oscillator which provides timing signals having a frequency determined by the sensed down hole temperature. The logic circuit responds to the signals sensed by the sensors for providing a binary coded output signal indicative of the sensed down hole pressure and temperature, wherein the sequence of the bits in the signal is indicative of the pressure and the frequency of the signal is indicative of the temperature.

The optical scanner provides a 3-line scan pattern adapted for omnidirectional reading of a bar code symbol. Beam deflection means in the path of a single light beam is operative to deflect the beam about a deflection axis and to tilt the deflection axis from one deflection plane to another after each beam deflection thereby producing three trace segments in separate deflection planes. Trace orienting means in each of the deflection planes redirect the beams so that the trace segments are projected into the scanning field to produce 3-line pattern of trace segments.

摘要： A method of and an apparatus for reading a manually fed data carrier are disclosed. The data carrier has at least one line of coded positions and is fed manually past reader means including at least one pair of reader means which viewed in the direction of motion of the data carrier are spaced apart by a distance less than the extension of a coded position in said direction. Said pair of reader means detects the direction of motion of the data carrier each time a transition between two successive positions passes said reader means. If the detected direction is opposite to the given read-out direction, the count of a counter is increased with one unit. If the detected direction corresponds with the given direction, the count of the counter is reduced with one unit provided that the count exceeds zero. If the direction corresponds with the given direction and the count is zero, read-out result is fed out. Consequently, correct read-out is accomplished irrespective of the movement of the data carrier past the reader means; for instance it does not matter if the data carrier is temporarily pulled back and thereafter fed foreward again or if the data carrier is fed jerkily.
