    • A radiation source directs radiation toward a radiation sensor in such a way that the intensity of radiation sensed by the radiation sensor alternates in a periodic manner as the radiation source moves radially relative to the radiation sensor. The radiation sensor generates either a "1" or a "0" depending upon whether the intensity of the radiation sensed by the radiation sensor is above or below a particular reference value. Thus, the angular position of the radiation source relative to the radiation sensor is indicated by an alternating series of "1"s and "0"s. A multi-bit binary value which indicates the absolute position of the radiation source relative to the radiation sensor can be generated. In this case, a band of radiation is directed toward the radiation sensor. The radiation band is separated into a plurality of portions, the intensity of each successive portion being twice the frequency of the preceding portion. Each portion of the radiation band impinges upon a corresponding sensor. The signal generated by each sensor element is thus one bit of a multi-bit binary value which varies as the radiation source moves radially relative to the radiation sensor.

    • A lift truck (16) carries a leftwardly directed ultrasonic receiver (32L) and a rightwardly directed ultrasonic receiver (32R) and an RF transmitter (34). Upon depositing its load in an assigned bin in a warehouse (FIG. 1), a load sensor (22) is actuated to cause transmission of a coded signal as to lift height and vehicle identification to a central station (60). This initiates a vehicle search by energizing ultrasonic transmitters (42-52). The ultrasonic receivers (32L and 32R) on a vehicle in a path under surveillance detect the sonic signal and relay this to the central station by way of the RF transmitter (34). The time duration which elapsed from energization of the ultrasonic transmitter to detection of the sonic signal is used to measure vehicle path depth and a comparison of the magnitudes of the sonic signals received by the receivers (32L and 32R) indicates the heading direction of the vehicle.

    • A bearing detection system used in an Airborne Collision Avoidance System. The detection end of the system is formed as a directional antenna having 3 directional antenna elements extending radially at a 120.degree. angle with each other. The antenna element has an actual length corresponding to .lambda./8, wherein .lambda. is the wavelength of the receiving wave, but the element has an effective length corresponding to .lambda./4 by the provision of an impedance matching plate and a back lobe suppression plate. Bearings of the incoming wave can be detected by means of relative strength of the receiving signal levels of the three antenna elements obtained by amplitude comparison and by forming 3 bit truth table for six directions including the 3 directions of the antenna and 3 boundary directions thereof by the strength of the receiving signal received by the three antenna elements.
