    • A new and improved swivel joint assembly, for use within a hot melt adhesive applicator or dispensing system, comprises an annular array of ball bearing members which is interposed between the housing section of the swivel joint assembly, to which the hot melt adhesive inlet supply hose is connected, and the shaft section of the swivel joint assembly, to which the hot melt adhesive applicator is connected, so as to readily facilitate the smooth rotation of the shaft section of the swivel joint assembly with respect to the housing section of the swivel joint assembly when the hot melt adhesive applicator is disposed in its deactivated state at which time the pressure within the swivel joint assembly is substantially elevated. In this manner, the hot melt adhesive applicator can in fact be readily and easily moved from its predetermined DISPENSING position or orientation to its predetermined NON-DISPENSING position or orientation in order to accommodate or permit the movement of auxiliary apparatus into engagement with at least one of two structural components to be adhered together, and upon at least one of such structural components there has previously been deposited the predetermined amount of hot melt adhesive, so as to in fact cause the adherence together of the two structural components. In addition, special packing materials are incorporated within the swivel joint assembly so as to provide the necessary sealing of the swivel joint assembly in connection with the handling or flow of the hot melt adhesive materials therethrough without experiencing or undergoing thermal deterioration.

    • An air pre-heating apparatus useable for pre-heating air supplied to one or more hot melt adhesive dispensing nozzles mounted on an adhesive supply manifold. Air is supplied from an air supply inlet on an outer portion of an outer heating member to an air supply outlet on an inner heating member having a heater therein. The outer heating member formed of a plurality of laminated plates having one or more air flow paths, which include preferably a serpentine air flow path portion that increases the residence time of the air therein. The air is supplied through the apparatus against a decreasing temperature gradient whereby heat is increasingly added thereto before the air is supplied to the nozzles. The apparatus is preferably thermally isolated from the manifold to permit maintaining the pre-heating apparatus at a temperature different than a temperature of the manifold.

    • Known thermal spray apparatus are modified to achieve thermal spray coatings of increased hardness. Thermal spray apparatus operate to develop a plasma stream for introduction to a nozzle, for eventual application to the surface of a substrate. Upon entering the nozzle, the plasma stream is passed through a plasma cooling zone defined by a plasma cooling passageway, to a plasma accelerating zone defined by a narrowed passageway that expands into a plasma/particle confining zone for the discharge of material from the apparatus. The narrowed passageway of the apparatus is cooled, and the powder material to be applied by the apparatus is introduced into the plasma stream along the cooled, narrowed passageway. To apply thermal spray coatings of increased hardness to a substrate, the ratio of the length of the plasma/particle confining zone relative to the diameter of the plasma/particle confining zone (the "L/D" ratio) is increased from the more conventional value of about 5:1, preferably to a ratio in a range of from 7:1 to 16.5:1, for use with coating materials including WC--Co, Cr.sub.3 C.sub.2 --NiCr and Cr.sub.3 C.sub.2. Ratios of from 10:1 to 13:1 have been found to achieve a particularly desirable result. Also the method and the coatings obtained.

    • A solid lubricant application procedure is combined in-line with a steel strip processing method which comprises processing steps upstream and downstream of the lubricant application procedure. The latter comprises applying the lubricant material in molten form or as a solution and may include temperature adjusting steps both upstream and downstream of the lubricant material-applying step. The space for incorporating the lubricant application procedure into the steel strip processing line is limited. The strip speed in the lubricant application procedure is synchronized with the strip speed normally attained in the steel strip processing method in the absence of an in-line lubricant application procedure. The steps of the lubricant application procedure are constrained to accommodate the space limits and strip speed synchronization requirement imposed on the lubricant application procedure when it is combined in-line with the steel strip processing method.
