    • A sports pole includes two to four elongated tubular members permanently joined together with a first of the tubular members or poles pivotably joined near one end to a second of the poles. A third of the poles may be telescopically received within or about the first pole and slidingly movable therealong between retracted and extended positions. There is a U-shaped spring and pin arrangement for locking the third tubular member in the extended position. A fourth of the poles may be telescopically received within or about the second pole and be similarly slidingly movable therealong between retracted and extended positions. Again, there is a U-shaped spring and pin arrangement for locking the fourth tubular member in the extended position. The first and second tubular members are pivotably joined by a hinge mechanism which allows selective pivotal motion between generally coaxial and generally parallel positions. A locking arrangement prevents pivotable motion between the first and second members when the first and second members are in the coaxial position. This unique combination of hinging with telescoping allows compacting of the sports pole structure with no disassembly.

    • A mounting for poles of jumps in equestrian sport, with a dish-shaped pole receiver which is suspended on a generally vertical rail adapted to be fixed to a stand. The pole receiver and the rail can be connected together by bolts which extend in one or more multi-segmented slots having one or more serially connected narrow, wide and further narrow portions. The bolts are flanged, or headed such that the shaft is not as wide as the head. The width of the narrow portion of the slot corresponds to approximately the width of the bolt shaft, while the wide portion of the slot is wide enough to accommodate the bolt head. The slot is able to secure the bolts by firstly introducing the bolt head into the wide portion of the slot, then engaging the shaft with the narrow part of the slot until the shaft comes in contact with the further narrow portion. The further narrow portion, on which the shaft rests, gives way under a pre-determined and relatively low vertical loading, so that the pole and pole receiver are forced downwards when this loading is exceeded, causing the shaft to deform the further narrow portion as it passes through. Consequent disengagement of the pole and pole receiver from the stand reduces the risk of injury to a horse and its rider, as well as destruction or damage to the pole mounting.

    • The present invention provides an improved tape printing device for printing a desirable series of characters in a preferable balance on a tape through a simple operation. The tape printing device of the invention is used for printing text data in a plurality of lines along a width of the tape and in a plurality of `paragraphs` along a predetermined length of the tape. The `paragraph` in the tape printing device is different from a paragraph in a word processor and includes a fixed number of lines. Even when text data in a certain line of a paragraph is deleted, the certain line is kept in the paragraph as a vacant line. In another application, the tape printing device of the invention includes a predetermined menu for printing text data in a plurality of lines. The plurality of lines are arranged in a good balance when the user selects one of possible choices for each required information in the predetermined menu. Since these possible choices are automatically varied according to the width of the tape, the user can obtain a label with rows of characters printed in a preferable balance, without setting required information according to each tape width. The invention also provides a novel technique for displaying a distinct printing image and improves printing with a shade pattern and creation of a foreign character.

    • An anchoring structure for a cable end comprises a securing body having a recess defined therein and having an opening defined through an outer surface thereof and extending into the recess, an anchoring nipple for being fixed to the end of the cable and fitted into the recess of the securing body through the opening for being operatively connected to the securing body. The nipple is a unitary member with a first substantially cylindrical half portion having an opening defined in a side wall thereof for receiving the end of the cable, and a second substantially cylindrical half portion joined side-by-side to the first substantially cylindrical half portion such that the nipple is substantially 8-shaped when viewed towards ends of the half portions. The recess has an oblong shape with a height and width only slightly larger than the diameter and lateral width of the substantially cylindrical half portions of the nipple, respectively, and with a longitudinal length somewhat larger than the longitudinal length of the nipple. With such structures, the nipple occupies a substantially maximum space within the recess when operatively disposed therein, which is desirable to prevent the nipple from rotating within the recess, and also desirably insures a large contact surface area between the nipple and the securing body when the nipple is operatively disposed therein so as to minimize the average contact pressure between a given point of the nipple and the securing body.
