    • A wedge shaped platen scanner sequentially records opposing pages of a bound document positioned thereon. A dichroic mirror is positioned between the surfaces of the wedge shaped platen. The two sides of the opposing pages of the bound document are exposed by light having different wavelengths. One side is exposed by a flash lamp that emits light with a wavelength that forms an optical path through the dichroic mirror and onto an imaging station. The other side is exposed by a flash lamp emits light with a wavelength that forms a reflective path off of the dichroic mirror and onto the imaging station. A controller insures that the opposing pages of the bound document are sequentially illuminated by the two flash lamps. Images of opposing pages of the bound document are focused through optics onto the imaging station. In one arrangement, the imaging station is a two-dimensional array of detectors which sense an image of a page of the bound document projected thereon. In another arrangement, the imaging station is a photoconductive belt which when exposed by either flash lamp records a latent image thereon. In either arrangement, a one page imaging station records opposing pages of a bound document either electronically or on print media, one page at a time.

    • An apparatus for imaging books or other bound documents with minimal stress being applied to the book structure, and for successively imaging and turning pages of a book by means of an air jet system. The book imager includes a support, for placement of a book in an open position, an imager having opposed imaging surfaces capable of simultaneously imaging the entire exposed, facing adjacent pages of the book in a distortion preventing manner, and an air jet page turning system. The support and the imager are relatively movable toward and away from one another, from a first position in which imaging is effected, to a second position in which page turning is effected. The air jet page turning system includes a fluffing jet for separating pages, a pick-off jet for separating the topmost page from the fluffed pages, a force applying jet for urging the topmost page into intimate contact with the imaging device and a page turning jet for driving the topmost page to the opposite side of the book.

    • A book document handing device for an image forming apparatus, and having a function of reading a book document and a function of turning the pages of the document. A scanning unit having the two functions is moved in a reciprocating motion on and along the surface of a book document laid spread on a right and a left document tables, thereby reading the document while turning the pages thereof. A table unit has, in addition to the right and left tables, a mechanism for moving each table up and down independently of the other table, members for fixing the front and rear covers of the book document to the two tables, and slide rails supporting the table unit in such a manner as to be movable in the front-and-rear direction relative to the body of the device.

    • Techniques described herein overcome many of the issues that have previously made the printing of a single copy of a book from a digital version unattractive and infeasible. According to one embodiment of the invention, an automated mechanism such as a computer program automatically determines whether the spine thickness of a to-be-printed copy of a digital version of a book will exceed the specified maximum spine thickness that a specified binding or other finishing device can handle. In response to determining that the spine thickness will exceed the specified maximum spine thickness, the automated mechanism automatically splits the digital version of the book into two or more volumes such that, for each volume, the spine thickness of the printed version of that volume will be no greater than the specified maximum spine thickness that the specified binding or other finishing device can handle.
