    • A method and apparatus for field testing and diagnosing at least one NOx-sensor in a diesel engine exhaust system are disclosed. The field testing apparatus is connectable to a truck having a lean burn diesel type engine, via an on-board diagnostic connector. The field testing apparatus is arranged to initiate a test cycle, and to diagnose at least one NOx-sensor in an exhaust system of the truck. The test cycle is performed on a running engine as a test sequence in a stationary truck, in at least two different states of operation, while NOx related values issued by the at least one NOx-sensor are measured over a predefined period of time. At least one state of operation is obtained by simultaneously opening the exhaust gas recirculation valve and controlling the back pressure valve for increasing backpressure. A dedicated algorithm is used to compare the measured values to a predefined model, and to provide a numerical summary and statistical evaluation of the sensor functioning. The numerical summary being indicative of a likelihood of the at least one NOx-sensor behaving correctly, and thereby enables a well founded decision as to whether or not the at least one NOx-sensor requires replacement.

    • An ECU executes a cylinder-by-cylinder air-fuel-ratio control in which an air-fuel-ratio of each cylinder is estimated based on a detection value of an air-fuel-ratio sensor to adjust the air-fuel-ratio of each cylinder. Further, the ECU computes a learning value of a correction quantity for each cylinder, which is obtained by executing the cylinder-by-cylinder air-fuel-ratio control. Then, the ECU determines whether the estimated air-fuel-ratio has converged according to whether the estimated air-fuel-ratio of each cylinder has been closer to a target value than a specified value for not less than a specified time period. A computation of the learning value is prohibited until the estimated air-fuel-ratio has converged. Therefore, it can be avoided to compute the learning value based on the fuel correction quantity that is obtained when the estimated air-fuel-ratio has not converged yet.

    • An abnormality diagnosis system which can judge a downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor to be normal accurately is provided. The abnormality diagnosis system of an air-fuel ratio sensor is provided with an exhaust purification catalyst, an upstream side air-fuel ratio sensor which is provided at an upstream side of the exhaust purification catalyst, a downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor which is provided at a downstream side of the exhaust purification catalyst, and a diagnosis device which uses the outputs of these air-fuel ratio sensors as the basis to diagnose abnormality of the downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor. The diagnosis device judges that the downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor is normal when a time counter which counts the time when the output air-fuel ratio of the upstream side air-fuel ratio sensor becomes a rich air-fuel ratio which is richer than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio and the output air-fuel ratio of the downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor becomes a rich judgment reference air-fuel ratio which is richer than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio or less becomes a predetermined judgment value which is larger than zero or more.
