    • To provide rider restraint means capable of allowing a rider to freely leave a vehicle without a manual release operation when there is no need to restrain the rider to the vehicle. The rider restraint means includes a belt restraining a rider, buckles making the belt detachable, a guide rail making the buckles slidable, a retractor unit controlling the slide of the buckles, and coupling release means releasing coupling between the belt and the buckles in conjunction with the slide of the buckles. The coupling release means includes an inner wire, a wire stopper, and a wire end. The coupling release means releases the coupling between the belt and the buckles when the retractor unit loosens the winding after collision and the buckles slide by a predetermined distance or more or when the rider continues to pull the belt in a state other than collision and the buckles slide by a predetermined distance or more.

    • A seat belt system (10) includes a lap belt (60) including a first portion (74) and a second portion (85). A retractor (76) includes a spool (96) rotatable about an axis (160). The first and second lap belt portions (74, 85) are secured to the spool (96). The spool (96) is biased to rotate in a first rotational direction to wind the first and second portions (74, 85) onto the spool. The first and second portions (74, 85) when tensioned urge the spool (96) to rotate in a second rotational direction opposite said first rotational direction to unwind the first and second portions from the spool. A locking mechanism (170) is actuatable to lock the spool (96) against rotation in the second rotational direction. First and second web grabbing devices (180, 182) are actuatable to clamp onto the first and second portions (74, 85) when the locking mechanism (170) is in the locked condition.

    • An advanced automobile passenger restraint and deceleration system is defined, the design of which is centered on retractible belts comprised of a unique, two-part combination of a single lap belt and dual shoulder belt restraints with the lap belt retractors automatically electrically locking upon application of restraint for firmly-located, tension-free lap belt comfort. This belt system features a padded body-centered, abdominal-force-distributing and fastening plate consisting of two halves, each half being attached to one shoulder belt and to one half of the lap belt with the two halves snapping together to apply said belt restraint system with one simple manual action. Further total restraint system enhancements are also included, with limited-releasing, energy-absorbing features added to a basic restraint along with further independent, padded, energy-absorbing capturing and restraining devices located to the fore of the automobile passenger which provide a potential for halving the deceleration forces suffered by a passenger in all minimum to maximum crashes. Finally, a proffering feature is included which automatically applies the restraint system loosely about the passenger's body, the passenger completing firm, final application by snapping together said proffered fastener halves.

    • A webbing retractor for use in an occupant restraining seatbelt system for a vehicle includes a lock wheel supported on one end portion of a webbing take-up shaft and an acceleration sensor. When an emergency situation of the vehicle occurs, the lock wheel and the acceleration sensor are engaged with each other, thereby causing a lock bar to be engaged with a ratchet wheel rigidly secured to the take-up shaft, and thus locking the take-up shaft from rotating in a direction in which the webbing is unwound. The lock wheel and the lock bar are connected together through a friction member by a predetermined frictional force. Accordingly, even when the lock wheel and the acceleration sensor are still engaged with each other after an emergency situation of the vehicle has ceased, the webbing can be unwound from the take-up shaft with a force which is greater than the predetermined frictional force.
