    • The invention comprises an apparatus for measuring the relative thickness of the lipid layer component of the precorneal tear film on the surface of an eye after distribution of the lipid layer subsequent to blinking is disclosed. An illuminator directs light to the lipid layer of a patient's eye. The illuminator is a broad spectrum light source covering the visible region and is a lambertion light emitter such that the light source is specularly reflected from the lipid layer and undergoes constructive and destructive interference in the lipid layer. A collector collects and focuses the specularly reflected light such that the interference patterns on the tear film lipid layer are observable. The collector also produces an output signal representative of the specularly reflected light which is suitable for further analysis, such as projection on to a high resolution video monitor or analysis by or storage in a computer. In order to facilitate ease of measurement, the patient's head may be positioned on an observation platform when the illuminator directs light to the lipid layer of the patient's eye.

    • The present invention provides an ophthalmologic apparatus that can noninvasively measure the state of the lacrimal layer formed on the cornea surface and that can quantitatively measure the state of the lacrimal layer without utilizing a reflection image from the retina. The ophthalmologic apparatus according to the present invention comprises an optical projection system for projecting light of a specified pattern onto a cornea surface, and an imaging device for photographing a reflection image of the projected light from the cornea surface. An operating unit calculates the degree of distortion of the reflection image on the basis of the density value distribution of the image photographed by the imaging device. The operating unit can determine the state of the lacrimal layer using the calculated degree of distortion.

    • To observe interference stripes produced by tear fluid, a low magnification light source 10 is turned on to illuminate the outermost layer of a tear film on the cornea Ec of a subject's eye. Light reflected from the cornea Ec forms an image on a CCD 16, and an interference stripes pattern 18a created by the lipid film on the cornea is displayed on a monitor 18. To measure the amount of tear fluid, light-emitting elements 20a, 20b of a high-magnification light source are turned on to irradiate a tear fluid meniscus Em that has accumulated on the lower eyelid portion of the anterior ocular segment. Light reflected on the surface of the meniscus Em forms an image on the CCD 16, and images 18b, 18c of the light-emitting elements 20a, 20b are displayed on the monitor 18 as clear images separated by an interval D. The amount of tear fluid can be quantitatively measured by measuring the interval D. A single such structure allows interference stripes created by the tear film of the anterior ocular segment to be observed and the amount of tear fluid to be measured.

    • A system and method are provided for measuring the thickness of a tear film layer and the heights of tear menisci around upper and lower eyelids of an eye. A plurality of images are acquired between consecutive blinks the eye using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The images depict the tear film layer and tear menisci as distinct from the cornea of the eye. In an embodiment, a plurality of reflectivity profiles from an OCT image are aligned and averaged. The difference between a first peak and a second peak of the average reflectivity profile is measured to determine the thickness of the tear film layer. The heights of the upper meniscus and the lower meniscus can also be measured from the same OCT image. In an embodiment, thickness measurements from the plurality of OCT images are combined. The measurements can be used to diagnose tear disorders, analyze treatments of dry eye and evaluate artificial tears.

    • A first exemplary embodiment of an osmometer for the in vivo measurement of the osmolarity of a bodily fluid such as tears or sweat comprises a detachable, preferably disposable, probe in combination with means for measuring the conductivity between two electrodes of the probe. The osmometer further comprises means for converting the measured value of conductivity of the in vivo sample into a corresponding value of osmolarity and display means for displaying a visible representation of that value. In a second exemplary embodiment a sensor of some physical quantity (such as dew point temperature) related to the vapor pressure from a bodily fluid is mounted inside a confining, generally concave shell which is placed adjacent to a portion of the human body for a measurement to be made. For the case of measuring tear osmolarity in the open eye, the confining shell could take the form of a conventional eyecup. The sensor can be a thermocouple or thermistor controlled by a microprocessor to measure vapor pressure by the dew point depression method.
