    • A chroma amplifier and color killer are described for use in a color television receiver. In a preferred embodiment, the chroma amplifier comprises a first pair of emitter-coupled transistors receiving a current source which has a D.C. operating component and an A.C. chroma signal component. A second pair of emitter-coupled transistors receives another current source which has only a D.C. operating component substantially equal to that received by the first pair of transistors. A variable ACC voltage and a substantially fixed bias voltage are applied to selected base terminals of the transistors such that one of the first pairs of transistors develops a gain controlled A.C. chroma signal output and one of the second pair of transistors develops an ACC-varied D.C. output signal free of chroma component. The latter signal drives a low power color killer for quenching color reproduction when the color component of the broadcast signal is missing or is of very low amplitude.

    • In a raster-centering circuit for a TV set or other cathode ray tube system, various voltage divider configurations including adjustable resistances are used to establish adjustment DC levels at one or both ends of a vertical deflection coil. If these adjustable resistances are adjusted to apply a potential difference across the deflection coil, the result is a constant centering current flowing through the coil to maintain a steady-state magnetic bias field for vertical centering of the electron beam. In one configuration the sweep amplifier itself is part of the DC centering current path. All of the adjustable resistances are ganged in aiding relationship so far as their effect on the direction of beam centering is concerned.

    • An X-radiation protection circuit in a television receiver which permits safe operation at higher voltages and beam currents with corresponding increased video presentation brightness without the production of hazardous X-radiation by means of a control loop in which current in the high voltage sweep transformer generates a feedback signal to a conventional shutdown circuit. Excessive transformer current evidencing high electron beam current automatically lowers the turn-on voltage of the shutdown circuit providing for CRT operation at maximum safe high voltage levels and electron beam currents in accordance with "Isodose" safety curves for CRT operation.

    • Disclosed is a UHF-VHF combination channel selector for use with varactor diode tuners in which varactor control voltage is provided by a plurality of tapered potentiometers covering the various tuning segments. Non-detent, continuous channel selection is provided by rotation of a single control shaft to which is coupled a potentiometer wiper assembly. A substantially linear tuner control angular displacement versus channel number displacement over both frequency bands is achieved by compensating for varactor tuner nonlinearity over the VHF-band with complementary VHF selector potentiometers while hyper abrupt junction varactor diode manufacturing tolerances are compensated for by normalization of the UHF selector by means of upper and lower band tapered potentiometers. Selector circuitry including the various potentiometers and associated resistors forming voltage divider networks is in substrate form on one side of the selector board while band select switching is provided on the other side of the selector board.

    • Disclosed is a horizontal drive system and method for operating a video display capable of precisely controlling over a wide timing range the interval between the arrival of the leading edge of the input drive pulse and the initiation of the flyback pulse thus permitting the horizontal output to the video display to be synchronized to a great variety of horizontal drive input signals. The leading edge of the horizontal drive pulse triggers a variable time delay monostable multivibrator, the locked output signal of which is coupled to a precision astable multivibrator. Potentiometer adjustment of the monostable multivibrator provides for adjusting video information position with respect to raster scan while the astable multivibrator acts as the oscillator in synchronizing horizontal sweep circuitry to the horizontal input drive signal.

    • An integrated injection and demodulation system is described for developing three color-difference signals in a color television receiver. To employ three separate demodulators, one for each color-difference signal, on a single integrated circuit chip without increasing the number of externally generated oscillator injection signals required, the system utilizes two such injection signals whose phases and amplitudes are such that their vector differences are employed to demodulate along one axis, and one of the injection signals is used to demodulate along a second axis. In addition, a fraction of one of the injected signals is developed inside the chip and vectorily subtracted from the other injection signal for demodulation by the resultant signal along the third color-difference axis.

    • This disclosure depicts a high-voltage cathodoluminescent gas discharge image display panel having an ordered array of display elements. The panel includes envelope means containing an ionizable gas at a predetermined very low pressure. The envelope means includes a transparent faceplate on the inner surface of which are disposed cathodoluminescent target elements. Electron source means produces at a given time at least one high-density electron beam, and includes means to cause a plasma sac to generate and gather electrons, and accelerate them to form a concentrated electron beam. An ultor electrode receiving a predetermined relatively high ultor voltage establishes a high voltage gradient in a plasma-free acceleration section which is effective to straight-line accelerate said electron beam in a substantially collision-free path directly into high-energy bombardment of the cathodoluminescent target elements. The panel includes light-stopping means whereby the useful visible light is solely that produced by high-energy electron bombardment of the target elements. Other structures including means for electron beam modulation are disclosed.
