    • The present invention is a turbine engine component comprising a superalloy substrate, a bond coat overlying the substrate having a thickness in the range of about 0.0005 inch to about 0.005 inch, a thin alumina scale overlying the bond coat, and a thermal barrier coating (TBC) overlying the thin alumina scale, the TBC having a thickness in the range of about 0.0025 inch to about 0.010 inch, and comprising at least mischmetal oxide. The present invention is also a method for the application of a thermal barrier coating to a superalloy turbine engine component comprising the steps of: providing an electron beam physical vapor deposition apparatus, providing a turbine engine component comprising a surface to be coated, providing an oxide ingot comprising mischmetal oxide and another oxide material selected from the group consisting of yttria-stablized zirconia, zirconia, yttria, hafnia, at least one other rare earth oxide, and combinations thereof, placing the component and the ingot into the apparatus, drawing a vacuum within the apparatus, forming a melt pool on the ingot, dispersing mischmetal oxide vapors and yttria-stabilized zirconia vapors, depositing the mischmetal oxide vapors and the yttria-stabilized zirconia vapors onto the surface to be coated, said deposition forming a thermal barrier coating having a thickness in the range of about 0.0025 inch to about 0.010 inch.

    • The present invention concerns embodiments of swim goggles. In one embodiment, the goggles include a pair of eyepieces that are not interconnected by a nose piece or a head strap. Each eyepiece includes a transparent lens portion that covers an eye and a peripheral frame portion surrounding a respective lens portion. The frame portion of each eyepiece has a posterior surface that carries an adhesive layer (e.g., a layer of adhesive tape) for adhesively securing the eyepiece to the skin adjacent the eyes. In another embodiment, the eyepieces can be interconnected by a nose piece and a head strap. The lens portion of each eyepiece includes a flat, anterior lens and a flat, side lens that is connected to a temporal edge of the anterior lens and is inclined away from the anterior lens to reduce hydrodynamic drag and optical distortion.

    • A container is provided in the form of a cup-like container body with a round mouth closed by a lid which becomes removably replaceable upon tearing away of a circumferentially extending tear strip which initially surrounds the mouth rim of the container body as a radially outer, integral part of the lid flange. As the lid is differential pressure-thermoformed, its radially outer region is formed into a generally inverted U-shaped structure which near the juncture of the base and radially outer leg of the inverted U, is provided, within the channel, with an inverted V-shaped notch of substantially diminished wall thickness to provide a line of weakness which preferably extends nearly fully around the circumference of the lid, but for at an angularly short tear-starting site. After the thermoforming step, and preferably in connection with trimming the lid from the surrounding scrap portion of the sheet in which it was formed, a mechanical crimper axially collapses an initially radially outwardly concave annular portion of the radially outer leg of the inverted U, intermediate the vertical extend of that leg, with an upwardly, inwardly directed barb or hook which, cooperating with the rim of the cup provides the snap lock feature for securing the lid to the cup. After the initial lidding, it is this barb which prevents removal of the lid until the tear strip is torn away.

    • A system and method for charging batteries in a system wherein the output of the batteries is converted to alternating current utilizing inverters. The alternating current from the inverters is modified by transformers and variable speed drives to contain properties which enable the alternating current to be used in a power grid to operate conventional electrical appliances. At least two banks of batteries are employed in the system. A unique battery charging device is employed to maintain the two banks batteries in constant substantially full charge. The battery charging device switches between a charge mode for one bank of batteries and a rest mode for the other bank of batteries. The battery charging device constantly and rapidly switches the different banks of batteries between these two modes. A timer controls the amount of time that each mode is applied to each bank of batteries. A solar panel supplies electric power to the charging device to charge the batteries.
