    • This invention provides method of producing a polymer which comprises substitution of carboxylic acid group for a terminal halogen group of a polymer obtainable by atom transfer radical polymerization. The carboxylic acid group may be a carboxylic acid salt group, more preferably a carboxylic acid potassium salt group. In carrying out the atom transfer radical polymerization in the practice of the invention, a transition metal complex can be used as a polymerization catalyst. The transition metal complex may be a transition metal complex with an element of the group 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 of the periodic table as the central atom, more preferably a copper, nickel, ruthenium or iron complex and, in particular, a copper complex is used. The polymer obtainable by atom transfer radical polymerization is obtained by polymerization of a (meth)acrylic monomer, particularly the polymer obtained by polymerization of an acrylic acid ester monomer.

    • A method for producing a hydroxyl-terminated (meth) acrylic polymer which comprises converting a halogen atom in a terminal structure of the general formula (1) --CH.sub.2 --C(R.sup.1)(CO.sub.2 R.sup.2)(X) (1) wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or methyl, R.sup.2 is alkyl containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, aryl containing 6 to 20 carbon atoms or aralkyl containing 7 to 20 carbon atoms, and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, of a (meth)acrylic polymer obtained by polymerizing a (meth)acrylic monomer using an organic halide or a halogenated sulfonyl compound as an initiator and, as a catalyst, a metal complex with a central metal selected from the elements belonging to the groups 8, 9, 10 and 11 in the periodic table, into a hydroxyl-containing substituent. The present invention can provide, in an easy and simple manner, a (meth)acrylic polymer which is hydroxyl-terminated at both ends in a high proportion and which has been difficult to produce in the prior art. It can give a cured product with good curing characteristics.

    • The present invention is concerned with a vinyl polymer having at least one group of the general formula (1) per molecule at the molecular chain terminus. -Z-R—CR1═CR2R3  (1) wherein Z represents an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, a group of the formula NR′, R′ represents a univalent hydrocarbon group containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or a bivalent organic group containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and R represents a carbonyl group, a direct bond or a bivalent organic group containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms; R1 and R2 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or a univalent organic group group containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and R3 represents an organic group containg 1 to 20 carbon atoms. The present invention is further concerned with a curable composition comprising the above vinyl polymer.
