    • A piezoelectric laminate stack having a plurality of piezoelectric plates manufactured of a piezoelectric element, and a plurality of metal plates. The metal plates have approximately the same shape as the piezoelectric plates, and are formed with at least two projections, respectively, on the periphery thereof. The length of the projections is greater than the thickness of the piezoelectric plates. The piezoelectric plates and the metal plates are alternately stacked. The projections of a first group of metal plates are located at angular positions different to angular positions of the projections of a second group of metal plates. The projections are bent in a direction along the axis of the laminate stack in such a manner that the first group of metal plates are electrically connected together and the second group of the metal plates are electrically connected together.

    • A piezoelectric actuator comprising a tubular casing and an elongated piezoelectric member disposed in the casing. The piezoelectric member has axially spaced ends, one of which abuts the shoulder of the casing. The piezoelectric member expands and contracts in response to an applied voltage, another end effecting a pumping operation. The piezoelectric member forms first and second longitudinal surfaces extending along substantially the entire length of axis. The piezoelectric member is formed as a lamination of a plurality of piezoelectric plates, to each of which is applied an electrode element on one of lateral surfaces. The electrode elements protrude on the first or second surfaces, alternately. First and second electrode members are located at the first and second surfaces, respectively. The first surface may be a surface of an opening which extends through the piezoelectric member, and the second surface may be a surface of an outer cylindrical surface of the piezoelectric member. Since the outer cylindrical surface is kept in contact with the inner surface of the casing, no flashover occurs between the surfaces. The second surface also may be a surface of another opening which extends through the piezoelectric member. In this embodiment, since the outer cylindrical surface has no electrode element, no flashover occurs between the outer cylindrical surface and the inner surface of the casing. A valve apparatus having the above-mentioned actuator and a method of manufacturing a piezoelectric member are also disclosed.

    • A gas sensor including a gas sensing element whose electrical resistance varies in accordance with the gas composition in the exhaust gas, especially the oxygen content in the exhaust gas, and a reference resistor connected in series with the gas sensing element. A predetermined voltage is applied across the series circuit of the gas sensing element and the reference resistor to detect the gas composition in the exhaust gas by a voltage at the junction point of the gas sensing element and the reference resistor. The gas sensor further comprises a circuit for monitoring the voltage at the junction point and another circuit responsive to the monitoring circuit to change the resistance of the reference resistor so that when the voltage at the junction point exceeds the predetermined range, the resistance of the reference resistor is changed such that the voltage at the junction point may change within the predetermined range in the state after the reference resistor is changed to ensure that the voltage at the junction point properly indicates the gas composition even if the resistance of the gas sensing element changes with the operating temperature of the gas sensing element or with time.
