    • An automatic transmission includes a gear transmission mechanism with first and second friction mechanisms which are alternatively engaged by alternative supply of first and second actuating pressures thereto when the highest speed stage and the next to highest speed stage are alternatively engaged, and a torque converter including a lockup clutch. A transmission control system includes a pressure control system which controls the gear transmission mechanism by selectively supplying those actuating pressures and possibly others, and a lockup clutch control valve which controls the engagement of the lockup clutch. The lockup clutch control valve is switched to its disengage position when it receives neither a first nor a second control pressure, and is switched to an opposite position by supply of either the first or second control pressure, this opposite position being an engage position for the lockup clutch if governor pressure is over a first specified value. The first control pressure is provided when governor pressure is higher than a second specified value higher than the first specified value and also the first actuating pressure is present; and the second control pressure is provided, if governor pressure is over the first value, when the throttle pressure is lower than a third specified value and also the second actuating pressure is present.

    • A hydraulic control system for an automatic transmission including a fluid coupling type torque converter, and a gear system provided with two or more frictional devices adapted to establish two or more speed conditions. The hydraulic control system includes a hydraulic pressure source, a line pressure control valve receiving pressure from the hydraulic pressure source to generate a regulated line pressure, a throttle pressure control valve for generating a throttle pressure commensurate with the intake throttle opening, a governor pressure control valve for generating a governor pressure commensurate with the vehicle speed, a detent regulator valve receiving the line pressure to generate a regulated detent pressure, a manual valve for enabling manual shifts of the transmission, two or more shift valves for shifting the paths of the line pressure to the frictional engaging devices in response to the opposingly acting forces of the throttle pressure and governor pressure, the shift valves including one shift valve operative to establish the highest speed ratio for the transmission, and a control valve provided in the shift valve for the highest speed ratio and adapted to draw in the detent pressure when the intake throttle valve is opened substantially to a full extent, in a manner to offset the throttle pressure acting on the highest shift valve, thereby controlling the highest shift valve according to a balancing relation between the detent pressure and the governor pressure.

    • A torque converter includes a coaxially mounted pump impeller, turbine, and stator, each of which includes an outer shell, an inner shell, and vanes extending between the outer shell and the inner shell having edges which define an inlet and outlet. The ratio between the axial extent and the radical extent of a section of the outer toroidal surface is less than approximately 0.9. The axial distance between the general axial position of the edges of the stator vanes which define the stator inlet and the axial position of the edge of the stator inner shell in the direction of the stator inlet is substantially greater than zero, and the stator vanes which define the stator inlet extend more towards the direction of the turbine outlet than does the edge of the stator inner shell in the direction of the stator inlet.

    • An automatic transmission includes a fluid torque converter and a first and a second gear transmission mechanism, each of which has two coaxial drive members--a power input member and a power output member--and is selectable to any one of several speed ratios. Rotational power is output from the fluid torque converter to the first gear transmission mechanism. The torque converter, and the first gear transmission mechanism including the power input and power output members thereof, are all coaxial on a first axis. A through lay shaft extends along a second axis parallel to the first axis, passing through the second gear transmission mechanism so as to support it, and is rotationally coupled to the power input member of the second gear transmission mechanism. A gear wheel rotationally coupled to the power output member of the first gear transmission mechanism transfers rotational power to a gear wheel meshed with it and fixed to the through lay shaft, which transfers this rotational power to the power input member of the second gear transmission mechanism.
