    • A hydraulic control system for an automatic transmission including a fluid coupling type torque converter, and a gear system provided with two or more frictional devices adapted to establish two or more speed conditions. The hydraulic control system includes a hydraulic pressure source, a line pressure control valve receiving pressure from the hydraulic pressure source to generate a regulated line pressure, a throttle pressure control valve for generating a throttle pressure commensurate with the intake throttle opening, a governor pressure control valve for generating a governor pressure commensurate with the vehicle speed, a detent regulator valve receiving the line pressure to generate a regulated detent pressure, a manual valve for enabling manual shifts of the transmission, two or more shift valves for shifting the paths of the line pressure to the frictional engaging devices in response to the opposingly acting forces of the throttle pressure and governor pressure, the shift valves including one shift valve operative to establish the highest speed ratio for the transmission, and a control valve provided in the shift valve for the highest speed ratio and adapted to draw in the detent pressure when the intake throttle valve is opened substantially to a full extent, in a manner to offset the throttle pressure acting on the highest shift valve, thereby controlling the highest shift valve according to a balancing relation between the detent pressure and the governor pressure.

    • In an automatic transmission for vehicles which has a fluid torque converter, a lock-up clutch for directly connecting the input and output members of the torque converter when pressure is supplied to its pressure chamber, and a gear transmission mechanism which has several hydraulic fluid actuated friction engaging devices for providing several speed stages: a control system which provides selective supply of pressures for actuating the friction engaging devices, which includes a system for manually selecting any of several desired shift ranges, several shift valves for selectively providing actuating pressures for the friction engaging devices according to the shift range selected by the manual selecting system and according to the balance between the opening of the intake throttle valve of the engine of the vehicle and its road speed, and a system for supplying pressure to the pressure chamber of the torque converter, when any one of several shift ranges is selected by the manual selecting device, only when the highest speed stage available from the gear transmission mechanism, for that shift range, is being provided.

    • A die-cast transmission extension housing has an outer peripheral wall or whell and an integral bearing supporting partition wall provided transversely of the longitudinal axis of the shell between the open forward end and the closed rear end thereof. The partition wall supports at least a bearing for the transmission output shaft extending through the open forward end, the bearing on the partition wall and the closed end. The inner surfaces of the shell forwardly of the rear surface of the partition diverge to the open end of the shell so that the inner space defined by these inner surfaces and the partition can be moulded by a die-casting mould part which is slidable out of the inner space through the open end of the shell after the extension housing is die-cast. The upper wall of the extension housing is formed therein with an upper opening adapted to be closed by a shift lever retainer. The side and bottom walls of the shell cooperate with the partition wall to define a second inner space which is so shaped as to be moulded by another die-casting mould part which is slidable out of the second inner space through the upper opening after the extension housing is die-cast.
