    • A circuit arrangement for flame detection for a transistor coil ignition system of a burner is disclosed. The transistor coil ignition system features a trigger stage which triggers a power transistor that is located in the power circuit of the primary winding of an ignition coil in order to charge the primary winding of the ignition coil with a charging current from a power supply. A circuit arrangement includes a switch having an ignition position and a flame detection position which in the flame detection position restricts the charging current flowing via the primary winding of the ignition coil to an intensity that lies below the charging current intensity needed to generate an ignition spark in the ignition position, so that ignition spark-over cannot take place without a flame. An analysis circuit analyzes the signal from the primary winding of the ignition coil that is generated after the charging current flowing via the primary winding of the ignition coil, in which case said signal has pulse peaks when there is no flame and has no such pulse peaks when the flame is present. The analysis is preferably performed on a display signal that is present at a display device in order to indicate the presence or absence of a flame in the burner.

    • A flame rectification type flame sensor circuit and method in which a generator injects periodic pulses of alternating voltage into a flame region, the voltage across the flame region being processed by a filter/amplifier which, in proper operation, produces a non-zero output signal only during the time a flame is present and a pulse of alternating voltage is being supplied by the generator. Final indication of a flame is produced only if a non-zero output signal occurs during the time a pulse of alternating voltage is being supplied, and not during the time between successive pulses of alternating voltage. Failure of an electrical component in the filter/amplifier is indicated if a non-zero output signal occurs during the time between successive pulses of alternating voltage.

    • The present invention is directed to an electrical circuit for detecting the presence of combustion within a catalytic converter preheater. Combustion of an air/fuel mixture within the preheater results in a wide-band high voltage RF signal across a spark plug gap disposed within the preheater, which is trapped by an ignition coil coupled to the spark plug for energizing the spark plug gap. The presence of combustion will effectuate an elimination or absorption of one or more specific frequencies within the RF voltage band. By coupling a combustion detection circuit comprising an inductor-capacitor (L-C) or resistor-inductor-capacitor (R-L-C) network between ground and a low voltage output terminal of a secondary winding of the ignition coil, and properly tuning the network components to one of the specific absorption frequencies, an output voltage of the combustion detection circuit during discharge of the spark plug will be responsive to the absence or presence of combustion in the burner. The output voltage is characterized by (i) a high voltage spike in the absence of combustion during discharge of the spark plug, and (ii) a low voltage spike in the presence of combustion during discharge of the spark plug. A comparator means compares the output voltage with a predetermined threshold voltage and generates a binary high voltage pulse upon the occurrence of a misfire.

    • A circuit for detecting whether the level of an electrical signal having a preselected polarity is above a preselected value, is powered by DC of the opposite polarity. This prevents current leakage within the detector circuit from simulating the level of the electrical signal. Such a circuit is particularly suited for detecting the current level provided by a flame sensor in a combustion control system. The preferred embodiment has a capacitor which is charged by the circuit and then discharged by the electrical signal. The time required to discharge the capacitor to a preselected level indicates the level of the electrical signal. A second embodiment uses a comparator in a feedback loop which allows sensing the level of a voltage outside of the voltage range defined by the comparator's power supply.
