    • An improved apparatus and process for imparting durable flame retardancy to textile materials wherein said material is impregnated with a solution having a poly(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium cation content of from about 10 to about 60 percent by weight, dried to a moisture content of from about 0 to about 8 percent, aerated by passing air through the dried material, cured by polymerizing the monomer on and in the textile material with exposure in an enclosed chamber to an atmosphere containing gaseous ammonia and thereafter contacting with water, the improvement comprising, impregnating said material with said solution containing poly(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium cation having a pH of from about 2 to about 9, and after contacting said material with said water, further exposing said material to an atmosphere containing gaseous ammonia.

    • The present invention is concerned with the flame-proof finishing of textiles, and provide, a flame-proofing composition capable of giving stable emulsions in organic water-insoluble solvents. The composition comprises a salt of (a) guandine or salts thereof with weak acids, dicyandiamide or cyanamide and/or reaction products thereof with formaldehyde, and (b) acid mono and/or diphospheric acid esters of alcohols having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the salt of (a) and (b) having in aqueous solution a pH value of more than 3.6, and (c) 3 to 15% by weight, based on the weight of the solid content of the composition, of compounds having the general formulae: ##EQU1## and/or ##EQU2## x being equal to 2 to 15, R.sup.1 representing a saturated alkyl group having 4 to 18 carbon atoms, and R.sup.2 representing hydrogen or a methyl group. An advantage of the composition is that it can be applied from organic water-insoluble solvents.

    • A water soluble product suitable for rendering textile materials fire retardant is produced by condensing a poly (.alpha.-hydroxyalkyl)phosphorus compound of the formula(RCHOH).sub.n (RCHR').sub.4.sub.-n P-Yor(RCHOH).sub.m (RCHR').sub.3.sub.-m Pand a nitrogen compound of the formula RNH.sub.2, HO--R"NH.sub.2 or ##EQU1## wherein R is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 3 carbon atoms,R' is OR or ##EQU2## R" is alkylene of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, Y is at least one anion selected from the group consisting of chloride, sulfate, phosphate, acetate and formate,n is an integer from 2 to 4, andm is an integer from 2 to 3,The phosphorus compound being present in about 0.5 to 6 times the molar amount of the nitrogen compound.Advantageously the phosphorus compound is a tetrakis(hydroxy-methyl)phosphonium salt or a tris(hydroxymethyl) phosphine and is present in about 1 to 3 times the nitrogen compound which is preferably ammonia. The condensation product, dissolved in water, is padded onto a fabric, preferably a polyester-cotton blend, which is thereafter dried and cured thermally and/or chemically. The fabrics are fire retardant even after multiple launderings.
