    • A process and apparatus for the continuous mass polymerization of styrenic and alkenylnitrile monomers. The process comprises the steps of continuously introducing a feed comprising a predetermined ratio of styrenic and alkenylnitrile monomers into a reaction vessel to produce a reaction mixture; subjecting the reaction mixture to conditions of temperature and pressure under which said monomers copolymerize to produce a styrenic/alkenylnitrile copolymer; subjecting the reaction mixture to horizontal agitation by rotationally agitating the reaction mixture within the reaction vessel by means of at least one stirring device; subjecting the reaction mixture to vertical agitation by withdrawing a portion of the reaction mixture from a position near the bottom of the reaction vessel, circulating the withdrawn portion in at least one closed loop externally of the reaction vessel and reintroducing the withdrawn portion at a position near the top of the reaction vessel; continuously withdrawing styrenic/alkenylnitrile copolymer from the reaction vessel. The process and apparatus also involve novel means for evaporatively cooling the reaction mixture and for devolatilizing the product copolymer.

    • A process for the polymerization of aromatic vinyl compounds and their copolymerization with alkyl esters or nitriles of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, wherein1. in a first stage, the monomer or monomers is or are continuously introduced at excess pressure into a first reaction zone and polymerized there to a degree of conversion of 5 - 40% by weight at a temperature of from 80.degree. to 170.degree. C;2. in a second stage, the reaction mixture is conducted at constant pressure into a second reaction zone designed for conducting highly viscous melts, the mixture flowing through this reaction zone at a rate which is 1.1 to 5 times the intrinsic rate, and polymerized there to a degree of conversion of 40 to 95% at temperatures of from 120.degree. to 250.degree. C, the excess pressure in the first and second stage being chosen so that the monomer or monomers is or are liquid, and the polymer is continuously removed from this zone with release of the pressure; and3. in a third stage, unreacted monomer is removed by evaporation, the pressure being chosen so that the monomer or monomers is or are evaporated, and the polymer is discharged as a melt.

    • Disclosed is a process for the continuous on-line recovery of alkenylaromatic monomer from a polymer-monomer melt and for the removal of alkenylaromatic oligomers and high boiling organic compounds from the thus-removed monomer. The process comprises subjecting a polymer-monomer melt to a two-stage falling strand devolatilization step, contacting the vapor stream from the first devolatilization stage with a liquid stream in a first contacting zone to remove oligomer and high boilers from the vapor stream and concurrently enrich the monomer content thereof, contacting the vapor stream from the second devolatilization stage with a cooled liquid in a second contacting zone to condense the vapor stream, and adding a portion of the condensed vapor stream to the liquid stream in the first contacting zone.
