    • A longitudinal conveying system for mechanically feeding one or more workpieces to a predetermined loading position, comprising a pair of spaced, parallel longitudinal workpiece supports, with each such supports including an upper support face and having a distal end and a proximal end. The predetermined loading position is located adjacent the proximal end of the workpiece supports, and a longitudinal conveying beam is moveably located intermediate the workpiece supports. The conveying beam has an upper surface for supporting one or more workpieces. Driving apparatus for moving the conveying beam in an upward direction, a forward conveying direction toward the proximal end, a downward direction, and a backward direction is provided for enabling the conveying beam to lift workpieces from the workpiece supports for movement toward the proximal end. The downward movement is substantially vertical, and the upper surface of the conveying beam is lowered below the upper workpiece support faces prior to the backward movement returning the conveying beam to a predetermined original position. A device for detecting when a workpiece on the upper surface of the conveying beam has reached the loading position is provided, and the conveying system includes a control device, for automatically varying the length of stroke of the forward movement of the upper surface so that the detected workpiece can be properly placed at the loading position by the downward movement of the conveying beam.

    • A system for transferring workpieces generally vertically from a station at one height in a workpiece support or transfer device to a station at another height in another transfer device or support. The workpiece is moved vertically by an elevator which travels along a path through the stations from a point below the lower station to a point above the upper station. To smoothly and rapidly move the workpiece the elevator is accelerated and decelerated and dwells at least when picking up and depositing a workpiece. To avoid collisions, interference and the necessity of precisely synchronizing movement of the transfer and elevator, when in its fully raised and lowered positions, the elevator is clear of and does not interfere with the transfer and supports and any workpieces in the stations.

    • A lift and carry accumulating conveyor having a frame with a pair of elongated, spaced apart and parallel stationary rails. A pair of elongated, spaced apart and parallel movable rails are mounted to the frame so that the movable rails are movable between a forward and a retracted position as well as between an upper and a lower position and so that the movable rails extend generally parallel to the stationary rails. A shaft is rotatably mounted to the frame and is rotatably driven by a motor. A disk is obliquely attached to the shaft and is mechanically coupled to one end of the lever while the other end of the lever is attached to the movable rails to move the movable rails between the forward and retracted position upon rotation of the shaft. An eccentric cam is also attached to the shaft and, through a plunger attached at one end to the movable rails, vertically moves the movable rails between the upper and lower position upon rotation of the shaft. The stationary and movable rails can include both straight sections and arcuate sections.

    • The method of cooking a food product includes the steps of providing a horizontal oven having a multiple rail conveyor extending therethrough. The food product is deposited on the entry platform area of the conveyor and the first elongated rails forming the conveyor are cyclically moved to intermittently advance the food product through the oven while simultaneously causing agitation of air around the food product to promote uniform cooking. The method further includes steps of heating the oven cooking zone to cook the food product the desired amount prior to exiting the oven, and the final step of removing the cooked food product from the exit platform area.

    • First and second walking beams are coupled by a proportional displacement arrangement to a reciprocating drive mechanism. Respective ends of the first and second walking beams are positioned in close proximity to one another to permit an article positioned on the first walking beam to be transferred to the second walking beam. The first walking beam has a close or narrow pitch between adjacent article-bearing slots thereon, while the second walking beam has a wide pitch. Inter-article spacing on the second walking beam is thus greater than the spacing between adjacent articles on the first walking beam. This arrangement permits a large number of closely spaced articles to be simultaneously deposited upon the first walking beam while standard spacing may be provided between the articles on the second walking beam for improved efficiency in the automatic positioning and handling of the articles. This coupled walking beam arrangement is particularly adapted for the sequential positioning of electronic/electrical components for manipulation by automatic handling apparatus.
