    • A shuttle matrix printer cartridge has a housing for storing the ribbon, an exit arm, an entrance arm spaced from the exit arm and a drive mechanism for removing ribbon from the storage chamber through the exit arm into position for printing between a printhead and a substrate and reentry into the cartridge through the entrance arm. The entrance arm is flexible in the plane of the cartridge toward and away from the exit arm to facilitate changes in ribbon drag produced during high dot density printing. The cartridge has three spacer legs along its underside for supporting the cartridge on the printer platform in use. Additionally, a post engages a recess in the exit arm to maintain the latter arm rigid during use, while such post, in conjunction with a drive shaft carried by the printer and received in a cartridge drive wheel, positions the cartridge in the printer against lateral movement. A shield is disposed between the drive gears and nip rollers in the drive mechanism to prevent ensnarlment of the ribbon in the drive gears.

    • Disclosed is an ink ribbon protecting mechanism for preventing jamming of an ink ribbon which is contained in a folded state in an ink ribbon cartridge comprising a case member and a lid member. An ink ribbon contained in such ribbon cartridge is brought down or twisted by vibration or shock during transportation or the like, which results in occurrence of jamming of the ink ribbon during use. Occurrence of jamming is effectively prevented by this ink ribbon protecting mechanism.The protecting mechanism comprises a protecting member including a plurality of needle-like or plate-like projections formed on a substrate, and these projections are inserted into through holes formed on the outer wall of a ribbon cartridge and intruded among laps of the folded ink ribbon. The ink ribbon is supported by these projections and is thus prevented from being folded or brought down or twisted by vibration or shock during transportation or the like.

    • A ribbon lift and feed mechanism for a typewriter/printer (10) in which the print ribbon cartridge (15) has deflectable arms (16a, 16b) for placing the ribbon (13) in a position confronting the platen (11) of the typewriter (10). On the platform (40), supporting the ribbon cartridge (15), is a shuttle (50) which is remotely oscillated as by a drive motor (90) on the frame (12) of the typewriter (10). Translation of the shuttle (50) and the cam (66) associated with the shuttle (50) effects movement of cam follower (66a) engageable with the cam (66), causing the deflectable arms (16a, 16b) of the cartridge (15) to oscillate between a rest and elevated position to place different portions of the print ribbon (13) intermediate the type element (23) and the platen (11). The shuttle (50) also carries ribbon feed drive means (85) which cause an incremental feed of the ribbon (13) after the ribbon has been struck at multiple elevated positions. Moreover, by placing a correction ribbon cartridge (30) beneath the ribbon cartridge (15), another cam (70) on the shuttle can effect platform (40) elevation when it is desired to dispose the correction ribbon (30) intermediate the printing element (23) and the platen (11). This action occurs as a result of the oscillation of the shuttle (50).
