    • A press system that provides rapid advance of one platen on a movable crosshead through the use of programmed hydraulic controls and is specifically adapted for use with sheet molding compound (SMC) presses. Rapid locking or latching of the crosshead and the platen it carries is achieved through the use of hydraulically operated clamping and release cylinders. The lower platen is supported on hydrostatic bearings permitting the platen to move and at the same time parallelism of the mold halves is maintained by swiveling molding power cylinders. Separate push-back cylinders are used to separate the mold through a short load path so that when the mold "breaks away" there is very little springback to minimize any part breakage during mold stripping.The lower platen also includes a mounting arrangement that provides the advantages of a rolling bolster or lower platen with a minimum of mounting structure. The control permits accurate rapid molding of plastic sheet parts in particular, which require high controlled force, closely controlled mold movement and operation at elevated temperatures.

    • A method for the multi-stage compression of a mass in a press, especially an extrusion press containing plastic or elastic masses. The mass to be extruded is precompressed up to a preliminary pressure by the rapid advance of the pressure piston. The initial advance takes place at a high rate without the occurrence of impermissibly high temperatures of the mass or the enclosed gas. The subsequent compression to higher pressure levels takes place in a sequence of stages in each of which the rate of advance of the pressure piston is constant. The rate of advance is increased from stage to stage until a final extrusion pressure is reached. An apparatus for carrying out the method of the invention includes a hydraulic flow rate regulator which is controlled on the basis of signals that are related to the pressure measured in the hydraulic system. The pressure signals may be derived by potentiometers energized by pressure-dependent switches.

    • A heated platten press for the manufacture of particle board features a pair of heatable press plattens 1 and 2 which are located between relatively movable press beams. The platten 1 is constructed as a rigid platten to define a flat reference surface for one side of the board to be pressed and is constructed so that it does not deflect either mechanically or thermally during operation of the press. The second press platten 2 is constructed to be elastically deflectable and is supported on a plurality of individual piston-in-cylinder arrangements 4 forming an array of adjacent substantially contiguous support fields which are substantially uniformly distributed over the whole area of the compensation platten. In operation a board is pressed and the deviation in thickness of the board from the nominal thickness is measured at points corresponding to the positions of the piston-in-cylinder arrangements within the array. The measured deviations are then used to control the individual piston-in-cylinder arrangements so as to correct the deviations in thickness.

    • There is disclosed a method and apparatus for developing and controlling pharmaceutical granulations from a tabletting characteristics standpoint, involving instrumenting a tablet press to derive both the peak compression force and peak ejection force information for each tabletting event in convenient digital form. The thusly derived compression and ejection force information is automatically scaled to desired units of force and utilized in compression and ejection profiles and in the calculation of the average and standard deviations for both compression and ejection in the pursuit of optimization of the tabletted granulation regarding such tabletting characteristics as compressibility, lubricity, relative flow, compression failure point, and tendency of the formed tablets to adhere to the tablet press punches. In addition to the capability of distinguishing between the large-magnitude compression peaks and the relatively very small-magnitude ejection force peaks in the raw analog signal generated from a force transducer mounted on the tablet press, there is provided the capability of measuring ejection force peaks relative to a plurality of selectable reference levels, which enables the granulation formulator to take into account the residual force aspects found to exist following compression and prior to ejection of a formed tablet.

    • There is disclosed instrumentation for use in connection with one or more tablet presses of various types, and in particular rotary tablet presses, for virtually any reasonable combination and number of such tablet presses. Tablet formation information, in particular compression and ejection force information, tablet capping information and information related to punch withdrawal is provided and processed by such instrumentation. This information is selectively applied to converting means which renders the selected information in a convenient data form for processing. Selection of the information may be made for example based on the need or desire to monitor a particular tablet press, tablet press station and/or individual tablet die/punch set combination. The selected information is processed by data processing means to provide output signals, including tablet press control signals, relating for example to the average and standard deviation of a pre-established number of consecutive tabletting events and determination of the frequency and number of abnormal tablet formations. The instrumentation may be employed to determine tabletting characteristics of pharmaceutical tablet granulations. Provision is also made for determining and isolating tablets failing to meet pre-established criteria.

    • A tablet compressing machine includes strain gauge sensors 5, 5' for monitoring the forces applied to piston rams 1, 2 by pressure rollers 3,4. The strain gauges are connected in a bridge circuit whose amplified output is fed to a mean value generator 15 and a logic control unit 9. The former generates a mean pressing force curve (A in FIG. 3) while the latter causes preset individual limit values for the pressing force signals (B, C in FIG. 3) to track fluctuations in the mean value curve, and compares the instantaneous pressing force signals with the individual limit values. Whenever these limit values are exceeded or fallen below the machine is disabled and the faulty ram is indicated on a display 14 by means of a sensor 7 which signals the ram being monitored. Means are also provided for disabling the machine whenever the mean value exceeds or falls below adjustable tolerance limits.
