    • A roasting system includes a roasting chamber having an air infeed vent for receiving air and a flue for directing exhaust air from the roasting chamber. An air reconditioning system coupled between the air infeed vent and the flue eliminates the need for external venting. The air reconditioning system includes a heater for heating the air received in the roasting chamber through the infeed vent and an air filtering system. A fan draws the exhaust air from the roasting chamber, passes the exhaust air through the air filtering system and past the heater and then recirculates the filtered and reheated air back into the roasting chamber. Continuously filtering recirculated air allows the roasting system to be placed in retail coffee shops without requiring external ventilation or producing objectionable odors. By reusing the heated air from the roasting chamber, the roasting system is also more energy efficient than current coffee roasting systems and allows the roasting system to be operated in non-industrial locations.

    • A process for operating a coffee roaster to obtain reduced levels of pollutants in exhaust gases vented from the coffee roaster. In the process, fuel gases are combusted in a combustion chamber and all of the combusted gases are directed into a roasting chamber for roasting coffee beans in the roasting chamber. The exhaust gases from the roasting chamber are then separated into a recycle stream and an exhaust stream with the recycle stream comprising the majority of the exhaust gases. The recycle stream is returned to the combustion chamber. The exhaust stream is then subjected to secondary combustion at relatively low temperatures prior to venting.

    • A dryer apparatus comprising an enclosure which contains a drying chamber for receiving articles, such as clothes, to be dried, an air heating passage and an air cooling passage. The heating passage is situated underneath the drying chamber and has inlet means and outlet means communicating therewith on opposite sides of said chamber, respectively. Air heating means are provided in the heating passage between the inlet and outlet means threof to heat air flowing through said heating passage. The cooling passage is situated beside the drying chamber and has inlet means which are situated at the top of both the drying chamber and the cooling passage, and outlet means at the bottom of the cooling passage, which outlet means communicate with the heating passage near the inlet means thereof. Air cooling means are provided in the cooling passage, between the inlet and outlet means thereof to condense moisture from air flowing downwardly in the cooling passage. Water collecting or draining means are provided underneath the outlet means of the cooling passage to collect water dripping from the cooling means. The arrangement is such that a major air flow is circulated by natural convection between the drying chamber and the heating passage and a minor air flow is circulated by natural convection from the drying chamber to the heating passage through the cooling passage.
