    • In a de-emphasis circuit designing method for minimizing the number of peripheral components of a video signal processing integrated circuit (IC), a circuit device for determining the level of a reproduced video signal of the de-emphasis circuit is included in the video signal processing IC. The number of components is reduced by designing all circuit elements of the circuit device for determining the level of the reproduced video signal of the de-emphasis circuit so that they are incorporated into the video signal processing IC at the time of design of the video signal processing IC, thereby reducing cost and reducing any deviation in the playback (PB) level due to external component deviation. The video signal processing IC comprises the de-emphasis circuit and a video level setting unit, the latter comprising an amplifier connected to an output of the de-emphasis circuit, a plurality of resistance elements, and a plurality of respective switches for ON/OFF switching of the resistance elements, thereby setting the gain of the amplifier and the level of the reproduced video signal.

    • A video signal recording system is disclosed which includes a circuit for generating a control signal representative of the level of the high-frequency portion of a full-bandwidth luminance signal. An adaptive deemphasis circuit reduces the level of the high-frequency portion of the luminance signal in response to the control signal. A folding circuit folds the high-frequency portion of the deemphasized luminance signal into the low-frequency portion. The folded deemphasized luminance is combined with the control signal and recorded on the video tape. A video signal playback system is disclosed which includes a circuit for separating the previously recorded control signal from the previously recorded folded deemphasized luminance signal. An unfolding circuit unfolds the played back luminance signal to produce a wide bandwidth deemphasized luminance signal. An adaptive reemphasis circuit boosts the level of the high-frequency portion of the unfolded luminance signal in response to the separated control signal.

    • A video signal recording and reproducing apparatus comprises a magnetic tape (4) into which video signals are recorded. A preemphasis circuit (35) modifies the video signals prior to the recording into the magnetic tape (4), so as to increase magnitude of high-frequency components with respect to magnitude of low-frequency components on time base. A record start or end ID signal is generated in response to a record start or end signal in an ID signal recording circuit (36) which memorizes this ID signal into a corresponding portion of the magnetic tape (4). A mute circuit (46) resets the preemphasis circuit (35) in response to the record start or end signal. There is further provided a deemphasis circuit (37) for modifying the video signals after reproducing from the magnetic tape (4) in a complementary manner with respect to the preemphasis circuit (35), so as to decrease magnitude of high-frequency components with respect to magnitude of low-frequency components on time base. An ID signal detecting circuit (38) detects the record start or end ID signal from the magnetic tape (4) and generates an ID detecting signal. A mute circuit (49) resets the deemphasis circuit (37) in response to the ID detecting signal.
